이 예비후보는 이날 “대구가 다시 대도시의 옛 영광을 되찾을 것인지, 중남구가 대구의 영광을 재현하는 중심에 우뚝 설 수 있을 것인지 중대한 선택을 앞두고 있다. 그동안 대구 중남구는 내리꽂기식의 공천으로 지역과 융화되지 못하고, 소통하지 못하는 리더십과 정책의 부재로 주민들에게 심각한 피해를 안겨줬다”고 지적하면서 전략공천 및 내리꽂기 공천을 경계했다.

이 예비후보는 “대구의 중심 중남구의 무너진 위상과 자존심을 되찾기 위해서는 중남구 주민들과 가깝게 소통하면서 지역과 중앙의 정치를 알고, 위기를 돌파하는 정책을 발굴할 수 있는 경험과 능력을 갖춘 사람이어야 한다”고 거듭 강조했다. 대구시당 등 국민의힘 당 사무처로 봉사, 재임하면서 지역민과 함께 했던 경력을 강조한 것이다. 

그러면서 이앵규 예비후보는 당이 강조하는 ‘국회의원 불체포특권 포기’대열에 합류하는 의미로 이날 “보수의 텃밭으로 불리는 대구의 중심 중남구에 출마하는 저도 국회의원 불체포특권 포기 선언에 동참한다”고 밝혔다.

이 예비후보는 국민의힘 대구시당 사무처장과 경북도당 사무처장을 지냈으며, 국회 1급 상당의 정책연구위원을 지냈다. 그는 사무처장 재임 중 언론 및 지역 당원들과 소통을 잘하기로 알려진 인물이며, 중남구에 출사표를 던지자 그의 이같은 장점을 해당 지역 당원들이 화두에 올리면서 그의 이름이 회자 되고 있다. 현재 그는 계명대 사회과학대학 객원교수로 활동 중이다.
