7일 달성군에 따르면 세천늪테마정원은 세천리 1669에 위치한 공공공지로, 2012년 성서5차 첨단산업단지를 조성할 때 기존 습지(세천늪)를 활용하여 만들어졌다. 장마철에 불어난 강우를 잠시 담아두는 기능도 겸하고 있어 그동안 본연의 목적으로 활용됐다.

지방정원은 지방자치단체가 조성·운영하는 정원이며, 정원문화를 공유하고 모두가 누릴 수 있는 장소이다. 지역만의 독특한 특성을 정원소재로 표현하는 등 다양한 유형의 정원들을 조성하여 시민들의 정원활동과 산업·경제 등의 활성화에 도움을 줄 수 있다.

이에 달성군은 2021년부터 시비 및 군비를 확보하고, 산림청 공모사업 등을 통하여 지금의 세천늪테마정원을 만들었다. 테마정원은 동화를 주제로 하여 아이와 어른이 다 같이 즐길 수 있는 공간으로, ‘어린왕자의 장미정원’, ‘호빗정원’, ‘일곱난장이의 사과정원’, ‘도깨비의 황금정원’ 등으로 꾸며져 있다.

봄에는 형형색색의 4만송이의 튤립이, 여름에는 화려한 장미꽃이, 가을에는 은은한 핑크뮬리가 테마정원을 책임지고 있다. SNS 통해 시민들에게 알려지면서 세천늪 테마정원을 찾아오는 이가 점점 늘어나고 있다.

‘수목원·정원의 조성 및 진흥에 관한 법률 시행령 제8조의 4’에 따르면 면적 10만㎡ 이상 체험 및 편의시설 등의 필수시설을 갖추고 시도지사의 승인을 받으면 정식 지방정원이 된다.

달성군에서는 지방정원 등록에 필요한 필수시설(화장실 등)설치를 위한 사업을 위해 총 30여억원의 사업비를 투입할 계획이며 사업이 완료되는 2025년 6월경에는 보다 정돈된 세천늪테마정원을 선보일 예정이다.

최재훈 달성군수는 “세천늪테마정원의 대구시 최초 지방정원 등록 추진은 정원문화확산의 계기가 될 것이다”며 “산책, 휴양, 문화가 공존하는 테마공간을 조성하고, 시민모두가 참여할 수 있는 ‘모두의 정원’을 목표로 조성해 가겠다”고 말했다.
