【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항해양경찰서(서장 이근안)는 경북 동해안 일대에서 밍크고래를 불법으로 포획·운반·유통한 일당 8명을 검거하고, 이 중 4명을 구속 송치했다고 3일 밝혔다.

해경에 따르면, 이번 사건은 지난 4월 말부터 5월 초 사이 포획선 1척과 운반선 2척을 동원해 밍크고래 4마리를 불법 포획한 조직적인 범행으로 드러났다.

해경은 지난 5월 7일 오후 8시경, 포항 인근 해상에서 고래고기를 불법 운반하던 A호의 선장 B씨(50대) 등 2명을 장시간 잠복 끝에 현행범으로 체포했다. 당시 A호의 어창에서는 밍크고래 고기 자루 165자루(1.8톤, 2마리 분량)가 압수됐다.

포항해경은 현장에서 압수한 휴대전화, 장부 등을 정밀 분석해 해상 이적 장소를 특정하고, 그 주변을 항해한 선박들의 항적 정보를 추적해 포획선 1척과 또 다른 운반선 1척을 추가로 특정했다. 이어 과거 밍크고래 2마리를 더 포획하고 유통한 정황도 밝혀내며, 관련 공범 6명을 추가 입건하고 이 중 2명을 포함해 총 4명을 구속했다.

이근안 포항해양경찰서장은 “조직화되고 지능화된 고래 불법 포획 범죄에 대해 강력히 대응해 나갈 것”이라며, “해양 생태계 보전을 위해 단속을 한층 강화하겠다”고 밝혔다.

한편, 밍크고래는 보호대상 해양포유류로 지정돼 있어 불법 포획 시 수산업법 및 해양생태계보전법 위반으로 3년 이하의 징역 또는 3천만 원 이하 벌금에 처해진다. 또한, 불법 포획한 고래의 소지·보관·유통·판매는 수산자원관리법 위반으로 2년 이하의 징역 또는 2천만 원 이하 벌금에 해당한다.

In addition, possession, storage, distribution, or sale of illegally captured whales is a violation of the Fisheries Resources Management Act and is subject to imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of up to 20 million won.
