우라늄 변환(Conversion) 공정은 채굴·정련된 우라늄 정광을 농축공정에 투입 가능한 육불화우라늄(UF₆) 형태로 만드는 필수 단계다. 컨버다인은 미국에서 상업 목적으로 변환시설을 운영하는 유일한 회사다.

한수원은 이번 계약을 통해 단순히 변환우라늄을 확보하는 것을 넘어, 한미 원자력 협력의 연계를 확대하고, 미국 정부의 원전 부흥 정책과 최근 한미 정상 외교 성과, 센트루스(Centrus)와의 협력 등을 기반으로 양국 간 신뢰와 협력 체계를 강화할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.

또한 이번 계약으로 북미 지역에 우라늄 원료를 안전하게 보관·관리할 수 있는 기반을 마련하고, 미국 내 시설에서 농축우라늄을 생산하는 데 필요한 원료를 미리 확보할 수 있게 됐다.

황주호 한수원 사장은 “이번 계약으로 변환우라늄의 안정적인 수급을 통해 에너지 안보를 강화하는 동시에, 한미 양국의 원자력 협력을 더욱 공고히 하는 계기가 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.

The uranium conversion process is a crucial step in converting mined and refined uranium concentrate into uranium hexafluoride (UF₆), which can be used in the enrichment process. ConverDyn is the only company operating a conversion facility for commercial purposes in the US.

KHNP expects that this agreement will go beyond simply securing transformed uranium and expand the linkages between Korea-US nuclear cooperation. Building on the US government's nuclear revitalization policy, recent diplomatic achievements between the ROK and the US, and cooperation with Centrus, KHNP will strengthen trust and cooperation between the two countries.

Furthermore, this agreement establishes a foundation for the safe storage and management of uranium raw materials in North America and secures the raw materials needed to produce enriched uranium at U.S. facilities.
