이번 협약을 통해 양 기관은 ▲짐바브웨 i-SMR 도입을 위한 예비타당성조사 ▲원자력 전문 인력 양성 지원 ▲원자력 기술 정보 공유 등에 적극 협력하기로 했다. 짐바브웨는 대부분의 전력을 수력과 화력에 의존하고 있으나 설비 노후화와 기후 변화로 안정적 전력 공급에 어려움을 겪고 있어, 원자력 발전 도입을 통해 에너지 포트폴리오 다변화를 추진하고 있다.

황주호 한수원 사장은 “이번 협약으로 짐바브웨가 지속 가능한 에너지 해법을 찾고, SMR을 통한 에너지 다변화를 가속화하길 기대한다”며 “한수원은 아프리카 시장 진출 기반을 강화하며 협력을 확대해 나갈 것”이라고 밝혔다.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) Signs MOU with Zimbabwe for Cooperation in Deploying Innovative Small Modular Reactors (i-SMRs)

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP, President Hwang Joo-ho, hereinafter KHNP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Zimbabwe Centre for Education, Innovation, Research and Development (CEIRD) at the Korea Institute of Radiological Health on the 22nd to collaborate on the deployment of innovative small modular reactors (i-SMRs).

Through this agreement, the two organizations agreed to actively cooperate on: ▲ a preliminary feasibility study for the deployment of i-SMRs in Zimbabwe; ▲ support for training nuclear energy professionals; and ▲ sharing nuclear technology information. Zimbabwe relies primarily on hydro and thermal power for its electricity, but aging facilities and climate change are hindering its stable power supply. Therefore, the country is pursuing the diversification of its energy portfolio through the introduction of nuclear power.

“We hope that this agreement will help Zimbabwe find sustainable energy solutions and accelerate energy diversification through SMRs,” said Hwang Joo-ho, CEO of Hanwha Solutions. “Hanwha Solutions will strengthen its foundation for entering the African market and expand cooperation.”
