이번 사업은 2011년 예천양수발전소 준공 이후 14년 만에 추진되는 신규 양수 주기기 구매 사업으로, 재생에너지의 변동성과 간헐성에 대응하기 위해 국내 최초로 가변속 기술이 적용된다. 가변속 양수발전은 기존 양수발전과 달리 물을 끌어올리는 양수 운전 중에도 전력량 조절이 가능하고, 배터리 수준으로 신속한 출력 조절이 가능해 전력계통 안정화에 큰 기여를 할 전망이다.

한수원과 두산에너빌리티는 이번 사업을 통해 양수 주기기의 국산화에도 본격 착수한다. 기술제휴사인 안드리츠로부터 원천 설계기술을 이전받아 기술 자립의 기반을 마련하고, 향후 후속 양수발전소 건설을 통해 가변속 양수 기술의 완전한 국산화를 실현한다는 계획이다. 아울러 예천양수 이후 위축된 국내 수력 산업 생태계의 활성화를 위해 국산 기자재 공급 비율을 단계적으로 확대할 방침이다.

황주호 한수원 사장은 “양수발전은 국가 전력계통 안정화와 에너지 안보 강화, 탄소중립 실현에 핵심적인 역할을 담당한다”며 “이번 영동양수 1·2호기 주기기 구매 사업이 침체된 국내 수력 산업에 활력을 불어넣고, 기술 자립과 해외시장 진출을 위한 중요한 시작점이 될 것”이라고 강조했다.

영동양수발전소 1·2호기 건설사업은 지난해 8월 실시계획 승인을 받았으며, 오는 2030년 9월 1호기, 12월 2호기 준공을 목표로 추진 중이다. 총 500MW 규모로 조성되는 영동양수발전소는 준공 이후 연간 약 800GWh의 전력을 생산할 것으로 기대된다.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (President Hwang Joo-ho, hereinafter referred to as Hanwha Power) signed a contract with Doosan Energy to supply main equipment for Yeongdong Pumped Storage Units 1 and 2 at the Radiation Health Center in Seoul on the 20th. The construction project for Yeongdong Pumping Storage Power Plant Units 1 and 2 received approval for the implementation plan in August of last year, and is currently underway with the goal of completing Unit 1 in September 2030 and Unit 2 in December. The Yeongdong Pumped Storage Power Plant, which will be built with a total capacity of 500MW, is expected to produce approximately 800GWh of electricity per year after completion.
