경주대학교(총장 김기석)는 28일 경주대학교 SDGs・ESG 연구센터(센터장 이창언 교수) 창립 기념식과 학술 심포지엄을 개최했다고 밝혔다.

경주대학교는 지방 도시와 지방 대학 위기에 대한 해법을 SDGs(지속 가능발전 목표)와 ESG(환경, 사회, 지배 구조)에서 찾고자 대한민국 최초의 대학 연구센터를 발족하고, 창립기념 학술 심포지엄에서 주제 발표와 토론을 통해 지역사회와 대학 위기 극복을 위한 정책대안을 모색했다.

이날 행사는 1부 창립 기념식, 2부 학술 심포지엄, 3부 토론 순으로 진행되었으며, 창립기념식에서는 12개 기관(단체)와 MOU 체결도 함께 이루어졌다.

이번 창립 기념식과 학술 심포지엄에는 한국지속가능발전학회, 한국ESG학회, SDSN Korea, 글로벌 SDGs・ESG 교육연구소를 비롯한 국내 SDGs·ESG 관련 기관 인사, 교수, 연구자 등 50여 명이 참석했다.

특히 김사열 대통령 직속 국가균형발전위원회 위원장을 비롯하여 김병완 한국지속가능발전학회장, 조명래 한국ESG학회장, 정희시 경기도의회 외교연구포럼 회장의 격려사가 이어졌다.

이어진 학술 심포지엄에서는 지방소멸의 현황과 해법, SDGs와 ESG 이행 실천을 통한 지방・지방 대학의 위기 극복방안 등 총 8개의 주제발표가 있었다.

이창언 경주대학교 SDGs·ESG 연구센터 초대 센터장은 “최근 지구촌의 많은 대학이 SDGs・ ESG를 대학혁신 전략으로 채택하고 그 적용과 실행에 나서고 있다”라며 그 배경을 “학령인구 감소와 고령화, 지방의 인구 소멸, 4차 산업혁명 등 사회 구조적 변화에 조응하는 고등교육의 질 보장(Quality Assurance), 대학의 생존 전략과 사회적 문제에 대한 대학의 역할 강화 등 사회적 요구가 반영된 것”이라고 강조했다.

경주대학교 김기석 총장은 “SDGs·ESG센터 설립은 우리 대학이 글로컬 대학으로서의 나아가는 데 큰 발판이 될 것이며, 대학의 자립력 강화에 기여할 것”이라고 밝혔다. 나아가 “대한민국과 경상북도, 경주시를 한 단계 발전시키는 계기가 될 것”이라며 기대감을 보였다.

Gyeongju University (President Kim Ki-seok) announced on the 28th that it held a ceremony to commemorate the founding of the Gyeongju University SDGs/ESG Research Center (Chairman, Professor Chang-Eon Lee) and an academic symposium.

Gyeongju University launched the first university research center in Korea to find solutions to local urban and regional university crises in SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and ESG (Environment, Society, Governance) Through the discussion, policy alternatives were sought to overcome the local community and university crisis.

The event was held in the order of the 1st part commemoration ceremony, the 2nd part academic symposium, and the 3rd part discussion.

About 50 people, including the Korean Society for Sustainable Development, the Korea ESG Society, SDSN Korea, and the global SDGs/ESG Education Research Institute, as well as officials, professors, and researchers from domestic SDGs/ESG-related institutions, attended this founding ceremony and academic symposium.

In particular, encouraging speeches were given by President Kim Sa-yeol, chairman of the National Balanced National Development Committee, Kim Byung-wan, president of the Korean Society for Sustainable Development, Cho Myung-rae, president of the Korean ESG Society, and Jeong Hee-shi, president of the Gyeonggi-do Council on Foreign Affairs and Research Forum.

In the subsequent academic symposium, a total of eight thematic presentations were presented, including the current status and solutions of local annihilation, and ways to overcome crises at local and regional universities through the implementation of SDGs and ESG.

Chang-Eon Lee, the first director of the SDGs·ESG Research Center at Gyeongju University, said, “Recently, many universities around the world have adopted SDGs·ESG as their university innovation strategy and are applying and implementing them. It reflects social demands, such as quality assurance of higher education in response to social structural changes such as extinction and the 4th industrial revolution, and strengthening the role of universities in survival strategies and social problems.”

Ki-seok Kim, president of Gyeongju University, said, “The establishment of the SDGs/ESG center will be a great stepping stone for our university to move forward as a glocal university and will contribute to strengthening the university’s self-reliance.” Furthermore, he showed anticipation, saying, “It will be an opportunity to develop Korea, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Gyeongju.”
