지난 18일 오전 11시 경주시청 대회의실, 학교법인 원석학원 김일윤 설립자, 서라벌대학교 정두환 총장, 경주대학교 이동한 기획경영부총장, 구본기 국제·교학부총장 및 양교 보직자들이 참석한 가운데 경주대와 서라벌대의 통폐합 선언을 위한 기자회견이 개최되었다.
이날 경주대와 서라벌대를 설립한 김일윤 현 대한민국 헌정회장은 소멸되어가는 경주시를 살리고 지방대학의 살길을 찾기 위한 상생을 강조하며, “평생을 일궈온 두 대학을 하나로 합쳐서 완전히 새로운 대학으로 육성시켜 관·산·학을 연계하는 중추적인 역할을 하도록 아낌없는 지원을 하겠다.”고 밝히며 경주대와 서라벌대의 통폐합 필요성을 역설했다.
이에 더해 서라벌대학교 정두환 총장은 “최근 경주대학교와 서라벌대학교가 많은 문제가 있는 것처럼 언급되는 사실 자체만으로도 송구스럽게 생각한다.”고 전하며 “지역 내 관심을 받고 있는 것은 환영받을 일이지만, 오해와 의혹으로 돌던 소문에 대해 지역사회와 소통과 공유의 자리를 만드는 것이 바람직한 방법이라고 생각했고, 대학이 지역사회와 함께 상생발전 할 수 있는 다양한 방안을 찾기 위해 혼신의 노력을 다하겠다.”고 소회를 밝혔다.
지난 2018년 경주대와 서라벌대는 통합을 추진하였으나 경주대 구성원의 구조조정 논란 등으로 교육부는 통합을 불허했다.
이 가운데 양교는 또 다시 통폐합을 추진하며 두 번째 통합신청서를 교육부에 제출했지만 통합대학이 모두 재정지원제한대학일 경우 신청 불가라는 통폐합 지침과 경주대의 임금 체불 등 여러 가지 걸림돌을 넘어서야하는 상황에서 과연 관할청인 교육부가 긍정적인 답변을 내놓을지는 미지수이다.
