지금의 지역 정치권 상황이라면 그가 자신의 배지를 사수하는 일은 만만치 않아 보인다. 도전자들의 도전이 워낙 거센데다 소통이 부족하다는 평을 듣는 그에 대한 지역 민심이 그리 호의적이지 않은 이유다. 다만, 정 전 의원에 배지를 잃었을 당시에도 그는 대구를 떠나지 않았다. 여기에 청렴하다는 점 등은 그의 최대 강점으로 꼽힌다.

류 의원에 도전하는 후보로는 배기철, 임재화, 정해용, 그밖에 손종익 씨 등이 있다. 

배기철 전 동구청장은 아직 예비후보 등록 전이지만, 26일 출마 선언을 했다. 윤석준 현 동구청장 직전에 동구청장을 지냈고, 이후 대구시 산하 메트로 사장으로 자리를 옮겨 최근 사퇴했다. 

동구청장을 지낸 만큼 인지도는 다른 예비후보자에 비해 뒤지지 않는다고 봐야 한다. 다만, 그에 대한 이미지 여론이 넘어야 할 산이다. 정량적 데이터만 가지고 공천을 한다면 누구보다 공천에 가깝고 류성걸 의원을 넘볼 수 있는 인물로 꼽힌다.

임재화 변호사의 최대강점은 청구고등학교가 꼽힌다. 이번 총선에서 청구고는 임 변호사를 비롯해 권영진 전 시장, 우성진 등이 출마한다. 가장 앞서 있는 사람은 단연 권영진 전 시장이다. 때문에 오히려 고등학교 배경이 부담이 될 수도 있다는 전망이 나온다. 임 변호사는 사실상 정치 초년생으로 신선한 이미지를 가지고 있다. 그런 이유로 수 개월 전만 하더라도 그의 출마에 관심을 보인 유권자들이 많았지만, 최근에는 그의 이름이 잘 회자 되지 않고 있는 등 검증되어야 할 몇 가지 과제는 남아 있다.

정해용 전 대구시 경제부시장. 배기철 전 동구청장보다 더하면 더했지, 인지도 측면에서 결코 둘째가라면 서운해 할 사람이다. 오랜 정당 생활로 인한 단단한 정치 경험과 대구시의원으로서의 행정 및 입법 경험, 여기에 대구시 경제부시장으로서의 광역단체 경험까지, 누가 뭐라해도 월등한 기량과 경쟁력을 자랑한다. 특히, 김기현 대표를 당선시키고 혁신위원으로 활동까지 한 상황에서는 그를 따라올 경쟁자가 보이지 않았다. 혁신위와 김기현 대표의 중도 사퇴가 정 전 부시장에 어떤 영향을 미칠지가 최대 관건인 가운데 당장 국회로 보내도 역할이 가능한 사람이란 평가를 받을 만하다.

이번에도 출마를 하긴 했지만 손종익씨에 대한 지역 정치권의 관심은 조금은 멀리 떨어져 있는 듯하다. 그는 거의 모든 선거에 매번 출마하고 있지만 뜻하는 바를 이룬 적은 없었다. 휘귀성이 사라져서 관심 또한 멀어졌다는 평가다.
