포항제철소에 따르면 그동안 포항제철소는 작업중 발생하는 응급환자를 주로 남구에 위치한 병원으로 이송해왔다. 하지만 경증환자가 집중될 경우, 의료기관에서 중증환자 치료에 집중할 수 없게 되거나, 환자의 치료가 지연되는 등의 문제점이 있었다. 또한, 북구에 거주하는 환자의 경우 퇴원 후 통원치료를 위해 남구 소재 병원을 방문해야 하는 불편함이 있었다.

특히, 가스중독환자가 발생 시 응급대응에 큰 어려움이 있었다. 현재 포항지역 병원에는 고압산소 치료기가 없어, 환자를 대구나 부산 등 타 지역으로 이송하여 치료를 받아야 했다. 이송 과정에서 가스중독환자의 골든타임을 놓쳐 중대재해로 이어질 수 있는 심각한 문제였다.

이러한 문제점들을 해결하기 위해 포항제철소 안전방재그룹은 북구에 위치한 종합병원인 좋은선린병원과 응급환자 이송협력 체계를 구축했다. 올해 11월, 좋은선린병원은 가스중독환자 14명을 동시에 치료할 수 있는 고압산소 치료시설을 도입할 예정이며, 이는 가스중독환자의 골든타임 확보에 크게 기여할 것으로 예상된다.

포항제철소 안전방재그룹 이동호 그룹장은 “북구 소재 신규병원 추가로 경증환자의 경우 이송병원 다양화를 통해 신속한 치료가 가능하게 되었다”고 말하며, “특히, 포항지역 내 고압산소 치료가능 병원을 확보하게 되어 가스중독에 따른 중대재해 예방에 큰 도움이 될 것 같다”고 덧붙였다.

좋은선린병원 신종균 행정원장은 “포항제철소와의 이번 협약을 통해 긴밀한 협력 관계가 구축되어 환자들이 신속하고 적절한 치료를 받아 다시 건강한 모습으로 작업장에 돌아갈 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 전했다.

Good Sunrin Hospital Administrative Director Shin Jong-gyun said, “Through this agreement with Pohang Steel Works, we will establish a close cooperative relationship so that patients can receive prompt and appropriate treatment and return to work in good health.”
