【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포스코 포항제철소(소장 천시열)는 작업자의 안전을 최우선 가치로 삼아 고위험 작업장에 산업용 로봇을 도입해 안전한 작업 환경 구축에 박차를 가하고 있다고 17일 밝혔다.

포항제철소에 따르면 이번에 도입된 산업용 로봇은 주로 가동 중인 설비에 작업자가 투입되는 고위험 작업을 우선적으로 선별하여 설치되고 있다. 이를 통해 작업자의 위험한 수동 업무를 자동화하는 동시에 생산성 향상에도 기여하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.

고위험 작업에 산업용 로봇이 적용된 대표적인 공장으로는 포항제철소 냉연부와 STS압연부가 있다.

냉연부 도금공장에는 ‘Backing Roll 수입 자동화 로봇’을 도입하였다. 이 로봇은 Roll에 묻은 이물질을 자동으로 제거하는 역할을 수행한다. 수입 로봇 도입으로 작업자들은 가동 중인 설비에 접근하지 않고도 안전하고 효율적으로 작업을 수행할 수 있게 되었다.

STS압연부 소둔산세공장에는 ‘Debanding 로봇’을 도입하여 코일의 밴드를 자동으로 절단하는 작업을 수행하게 함으로써 작업자의 안전을 확보했다. 이를 통해 작업자가 코일 밴드를 수동으로 절단하면서 발생할 수 있는 절단면에 의한 부상을 예방할 수 있게 되었다.

특히 주목할 만한 점은 이러한 기술이 포스코와 포항지역 로봇 개발 기업들 간의 긴밀한 협력을 통해 이루어졌다는 것이다. 기업 관계자들은 "이번 자동화 로봇의 성공적인 적용으로 기업 경쟁력을 한층 끌어올리는 계기를 마련하게 되었다"고 전했다.

포항제철소는 이러한 우수 스마트기술 사례를 사내에 공유하고 있으며, 유사공정에 확대 적용할 예정이다. 또한 포스코는 앞으로도 안전한 작업환경 조성을 위해 로봇 자동화를 지속적으로 추진하고, 포항지역 로봇 업체들과의 협업을 통해 더욱 혁신적인 로봇 기술 개발에 나설 계획이다.
