포항제철소는 2011년부터 포항철강산업단지에 입주한 중소기업을 대상으로 QSS혁신활동을 지원하고 있다. QSS(Quick Six Sigma) 기법은 현장의 낭비·위험 요인을 발굴·개선하여 생산효율을 극대화하는 포스코 고유의 일하는 방식을 뜻한다. 

포항제철소는 이번 협약식을 통해 기존 QSS혁신활동 전수에 이어, 중소기업 맞춤형 안전·환경 부문 지원을 강화한다고 밝혀, 포항제철소와 포항철강관리공단의 동반성장을 다짐하는 자리가 되었다.

이번 협약식에는 천시열 포항제철소장, 정창식 행정부소장, 박상욱 안전환경부소장을 비롯한 포항제철소 임직원과 전익현 포항철강관리공단 이사장 등 포항철강관리공단 관계자와 나주영 포항상공회의소 회장이 참석해 기존 QSS혁신활동에서 확대된 업무 범위에 대해 논의하는 자리를 가졌다.

협약의 주요내용은 △ 포항제철소와 포항철강관리공단 역할과 책임 △ 안전·환경 지원 강화로 QSS활동의 체계적으로 추진 △안전·환경 강화 QSS활동의 개선문화 정착을 위한 모니터링 및 피드백 강화 등으로 안전하고 행복한 일터 조성을 위한 사항들로 구성됐다.

세부내용으로 포항제철소는 포항철강산업단지 내 중소기업을 대상으로 안전진단, 전문가 양성 및 글로벌 안전센터 체험 교육을 지원하는 등 중소기업의 안전교육을 적극적으로 지원하고 환경·에너지 진단 및 개선활동에 대해서도 전문적인 컨설턴트 자문을 제공할 예정이다.

천시열 제철소장은 “포항제철소의 QSS활동은 품질, 원가, 납기 향상을 통한 기업경쟁력 확보에 기여하였다”며 “앞으로는 QSS활동을 바탕으로 한 위험성 감소 및 작업환경 개선 지원을 중점적으로 강화해, 포항철강관리공단 회원사의 행복한 일터 조성에 앞장서겠다”고 말했다.

포항제철소는 포항철강산업단지 내 116개 기업을 대상으로 QSS혁신활동을 지원해 오고 있다. 협약식이 끝나고, 천시열 제철소장과 전익현 이사장은 포항철강산업단지에 위치한 한 중소기업을 방문해 직원들을 격려하고 혁신활동 현장을 꼼꼼하게 살펴봤다.

한편, 포항제철소는 이번 협약식을 시작으로 포항철강관리공단과 더욱 긴밀하게 협력하여 안전한 포항철강산업단지를 조성하는 혁신 동행을 지속할 예정이며, 연말에 혁신활동 성과공유회를 통해 우수사례 발표식을 진행할 계획이다.
