국민의힘 전당대회 출마 여부를 묻는 질문에는 “일정이 정해져야 출마 여부도 결정할 수 있다”며 “지금은 장날이 서지도 않았는데 혼자 나가 장사할 수는 없는 상황”이라고 말을 아꼈다.

최근 대구 지역에서 나타난 국민의힘 지지율 하락에 대해서는 “일시적인 현상”이라며 “시당위원장 선출 잡음도 정리된 만큼, 다시 회복될 가능성이 있다”고 평가했다. 다만 “복지성 예산을 앞세운 민주당의 추경은 지지율에는 영향을 줄 수 있으나, 결국 재정 부담은 국민에게 돌아간다”고 지적했다.

국민의힘 일부 인사들이 주장하는 ‘윤석열 대통령과의 정치적 단절’론에 대해서는 “단절이라는 말이 추상적”이라며 “계엄이나 탄핵 문제는 당 내부에서 보다 깊은 고민이 필요하다”고 선을 그었다.

최근 정청래·박찬대 의원 등이 거론한 ‘국민의힘 위헌 정당 해산론’에 대해선 “정당 해산은 헌법재판소의 판단이 있어야 가능한 일”이라며 “정당을 논하기 이전에 먼저 스스로가 법치주의에 충실했는지 돌아봐야 할 것”이라고 말했다.

진보에서 출발해 보수 진영으로 전향한 자신의 정치 여정을 돌아보며 김 전 장관은 “진보라는 이름 아래 부정부패와 갑질, 반미 운동, 도덕성 논란이 이어지는 것은 결코 진보가 아니다”라며 “보수와 진보 모두 국민을 위한 정치가 무엇인지 성찰할 때”라고 강조했다.
