DGIST-Korea Naval Academy Joint Research Team Develops Doppler Resolution Enhancement Algorithm for FMCW Radar

The research teams of Sang-dong Kim and Bong-seok Kim from the Future Mobility Research Department at DGIST (President Lee Kun-woo) and Professor Young-doo Choi from the Korea Naval Academy have jointly developed an "extrapolation-based Doppler resolution enhancement algorithm" for FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) radar.

Through this research, the research team succeeded in achieving performance that is superior to existing ultra-high-resolution radar technology in terms of precision and efficiency.

This technology improves radar detection accuracy without complex additional computation or expensive equipment, and is expected to be a core technology for various intelligent mobile radar systems, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned ships (UVSs), and autonomous vehicles.

Existing FMCW radars analyze the Doppler effect to obtain target velocity information, but the resolution limitations of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)-based methods make it difficult to distinguish the velocity of nearby objects.

Accordingly, a joint research team from DGIST and the Naval Academy has developed an algorithm that utilizes a novel signal extrapolation technique to improve Doppler resolution without increasing observation time.

As a result, the proposed algorithm achieved a reduction in velocity estimation error (RMSE) by up to 33% and a target non-detection rate of up to 68% compared to existing methods. Notably, the computational complexity was maintained at the level of conventional FFT, ensuring both fast processing speed and high efficiency.

This technology effectively resolves signal interference even when multiple targets of similar speed are detected simultaneously, significantly improving proximity target separation and recognition accuracy. Furthermore, its design allows for real-time application without additional hardware, earning high praise for its industrial applicability.

DGIST Principal Researcher Kim Sang-dong (also holding a concurrent position in the Convergence Engineering major) stated, "This research is a significant achievement that simultaneously improves the efficiency and precision of radar signal processing. It will likely develop into a core technology in diverse fields, including defense, autonomous vehicles, and unmanned systems."

Meanwhile, this research was conducted with the support of the DGIST Institutional Project and the Naval Academy Marine Research Institute Academic Research Project, and the results were published in the November issue of the Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology, an internationally renowned academic journal in the field of electrical and electronic engineering.
