선정된 기업은 뉴바이올로지학과 김민석 교수가 설립한 정밀의료 바이오테크 기업 ㈜씨티셀즈(대표 김민석·이정민)와 에너지공학과 이호춘 교수가 설립한 전고체 전지 스타트업 ㈜솔리텍(대표 이호춘)이다.

스케일업 팁스는 민간투자주도형 R&D 프로그램으로, 기술력과 성장 가능성을 갖춘 기업에 민간 운영사가 선투자하면 정부가 연구개발 자금을 매칭해 지원하는 제도다. 민간의 시장 검증과 정부의 연구개발 지원을 결합해 기술 기반 기업의 빠른 성장을 돕는 것이 특징이다.

씨티셀즈는 LSK인베스트먼트의 추천을 통해 과제에 선정돼 총 15억 2천만 원 규모(정부지원금 11억 4천만 원)의 연구개발 자금을 확보했다. 씨티셀즈는 혈액 속에 극소량 존재하는 순환종양세포(CTC)와 종양미세환경(TME) 세포를 동시에 검출·분석하는 인공지능(AI) 기반 액체생검 플랫폼을 개발하고 있다. 액체생검은 혈액 검사만으로 암 정보를 분석할 수 있어 환자 부담을 줄이면서도 정밀한 진단이 가능한 기술로 주목받고 있다.

이번 과제를 통해 씨티셀즈는 혈액 이미지에서 약 10만 개의 세포를 자동 분석해 CTC와 TME 세포를 동시에 분류하는 임상 연계형 AI 진단 소프트웨어(SaMD)를 고도화할 계획이다. 해당 기술은 기존 유전자 중심(ctDNA) 액체생검의 한계를 넘어 세포 기반 정밀진단과 다양한 생체 정보 분석이 가능한 차세대 플랫폼으로 평가받고 있다. 현재 국립암센터를 비롯해 고려대·세브란스·아산병원 등 국내 주요 의료기관과 협력 중이며, 미국 MD앤더슨 암센터와 일본 국립암센터, 글로벌 제약사 다이이치산쿄와도 공동연구를 수행하고 있다.

솔리텍은 미래과학기술지주의 투자 및 추천을 바탕으로 과제에 선정돼 향후 3년간 총 15억 2천만 원 규모(정부지원금 11억 4천만 원)의 연구개발 자금을 지원받는다. 2022년 10월 설립된 솔리텍은 액체 전해질 대신 고체 전해질을 사용하는 전고체 전지 전문 스타트업으로, 높은 안전성과 에너지 밀도를 동시에 구현하는 기술을 개발하고 있다.

솔리텍은 이번 과제를 통해 ‘350Wh/kg급 실리콘 음극 적용 전고체 전지 개발’을 본격 추진한다. 해당 기술은 기존 리튬이온전지보다 에너지 저장량을 크게 높이면서도 화재 위험을 낮춘 차세대 배터리로, 전기차(EV), 에너지저장장치(ESS), 도심항공모빌리티(eVTOL), 군수, 휴머노이드 등 다양한 분야에서 활용이 기대된다.

이번 스케일업 팁스 선정은 DGIST 교원 창업기업들이 실험실에서 개발한 원천기술을 실제 산업 경쟁력으로 연결하고 있음을 보여주는 사례로, 바이오와 에너지라는 서로 다른 분야에서 동시에 글로벌 수준의 기술력을 인정받았다는 점에서 의미가 크다.

김민석 씨티셀즈 대표는 “액체생검 분석 전 과정의 자동화와 표준화를 통해 세계 최고 수준의 암 정밀진단 솔루션을 완성해 나가겠다”고 말했다. 이호춘 솔리텍 대표는 “이번 선정을 계기로 전고체 전지 기술 고도화와 사업 성과 창출에 더욱 속도를 내겠다”고 밝혔다.

 Two DGIST Faculty Startups Selected for "Scale-up TIPS" R&D Projects, Demonstrating Bio-Energy Technology

Two DGIST faculty startups (President Lee Kun-woo) have been selected for the 2025 "Scale-up TIPS" R&D support project, hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

The selected companies are Citicells (CEOs Kim Min-seok and Lee Jung-min), a precision medicine biotech company founded by Professor Kim Min-seok of the Department of New Biology, and Solitech (CEO Lee Ho-chun), an all-solid-state battery startup founded by Professor Lee Ho-chun of the Department of Energy Engineering.

Scale-up TIPS is a private investment-led R&D program where the government matches R&D funding with private investment in companies with strong technological prowess and growth potential. Its unique feature is that it combines private market validation with government R&D support to accelerate the growth of technology-based companies.

Citicells was selected for the project through a recommendation from LSK Investment and secured a total of KRW 1.52 billion (KRW 1.14 billion in government subsidies) in R&D funding. Citicells is developing an AI-based liquid biopsy platform that simultaneously detects and analyzes circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and tumor microenvironment (TME) cells, both of which are present in minute quantities in the blood. Liquid biopsy is gaining attention as a technology that can analyze cancer information through a blood test alone, reducing the burden on patients while enabling precise diagnosis.

Through this project, Citicells plans to advance its clinically relevant AI diagnostic software (SaMD), which automatically analyzes approximately 100,000 cells in blood images and simultaneously classifies CTCs and TME cells. This technology is recognized as a next-generation platform capable of cell-based precision diagnosis and analysis of various biometric data, transcending the limitations of existing gene-based (ctDNA) liquid biopsy. Currently, Solitech is collaborating with major domestic medical institutions, including the National Cancer Center, Korea University, Severance Hospital, and Asan Medical Center. It is also conducting joint research with the MD Anderson Cancer Center in the US, the National Cancer Center in Japan, and the global pharmaceutical company Daiichi Sankyo.

Solitech was selected for the project based on investment and recommendations from Mirae Science and Technology Holdings and will receive a total of KRW 1.52 billion (KRW 1.14 billion in government subsidies) in R&D funding over the next three years. Founded in October 2022, Solitech is a startup specializing in all-solid-state batteries that use solid electrolytes instead of liquid electrolytes. It is developing technology that simultaneously achieves high safety and energy density.

Through this project, Solitech will fully pursue the development of a 350Wh/kg all-solid-state battery using a silicon anode. This technology, a next-generation battery that significantly increases energy storage capacity while reducing fire risk compared to existing lithium-ion batteries, is expected to find application in diverse fields, including electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage systems (ESS), urban air mobility (eVTOL), military, and humanoids.

This Scale-Up TIPS selection demonstrates how DGIST faculty startups are leveraging the fundamental technologies developed in their laboratories to drive real-world industrial competitiveness. This recognition is significant in that it simultaneously recognizes global-level technological prowess in the diverse fields of biotechnology and energy.

Kim Min-seok, CEO of Citycells, stated, "We will complete a world-class precision cancer diagnosis solution by automating and standardizing the entire liquid biopsy analysis process." Lee Ho-chun, CEO of Solitech, stated, "With this selection, we will further accelerate the advancement of all-solid-state battery technology and the creation of business results."
