【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=(재)포항테크노파크(원장 배영호, 이하 포항TP)는 17일 포항TP AV회의실에서 ‘2025년 경상북도 SMR(소형모듈원자로) 산업육성 전문가그룹 운영사업’ 최종보고회를 열고, 경북 지역 SMR 산업 생태계 조성을 위한 전략과 기술개발 구상을 발표했다.

이번 보고회는 경상북도 지원으로 추진된 사업의 성과를 공유하고 향후 추진 방향을 논의하기 위해 마련됐다. 특히 정부가 최근 2038년까지 SMR 1기 건설을 포함한 원전 확대 계획을 내놓고, 2026년 예산안에 SMR 기술개발 및 인허가 지원을 위한 3,000억 원 규모의 투자를 예고한 상황에서, 이번 보고회는 더욱 큰 주목을 받았다.

전문가그룹은 ‘경북 SMR ATLAS Cluster’ 구축을 목표로 단계별 전략과 주요 추진 과제를 제시했다. 이를 통해 기업 지원을 기반으로 차세대 SMR의 개발·실증·생산을 아우르는 산업 생태계 조성 방향을 구체화했다.

또한 SMR 핵심부품 제작을 위한 적층형 제조기술 등 6건의 기술개발안이 제안됐으며, 이 결과물들은 향후 경북도의 SMR 산업 정책 수립과 사업 기획에 폭넓게 활용될 전망이다.

이날 보고회에는 경상북도, 포항TP, 환동해산업연구원, 경북연구원, 경북대학교, 한국수력원자력, 한국원자력연구원, 한국재료연구원, 현대건설, 포스코이앤씨, 수산ENS, 코힙스테크, 한동대학교, 포항공과대학교, 대한전기협회 등 산·학·연·관 전문가 25명이 참석해 SMR 산업 육성을 위한 다양한 의견을 교환했다.

배영호 포항TP 원장은 “이번 최종보고회는 경상북도가 SMR 산업의 전략적 거점으로 도약하는 데 중요한 이정표가 될 것”이라며 “전문가그룹의 분석과 제언을 바탕으로 지역 기업들이 미래 원전 산업 생태계 구축에 적극 참여할 수 있도록 기술·산업 기반을 강화하겠다”고 말했다.

Pohang TP Holds Final Report Meeting for 'Gyeongsangbuk-do SMR Industry Promotion Expert Group'…Presenting Blueprint for Next-Generation Nuclear Power Ecosystem

Pohang Technopark (President Bae Young-ho, hereinafter Pohang TP) held the final report meeting for the '2025 Gyeongsangbuk-do SMR (Small Modular Reactor) Industry Promotion Expert Group Operation Project' in the Pohang TP AV conference room on the 17th. The group presented strategies and technology development plans for fostering an SMR industry ecosystem in the Gyeongsangbuk-do region.

This meeting was organized to share the achievements of projects supported by Gyeongsangbuk-do and discuss future directions. This meeting garnered significant attention, particularly given the government's recent announcement of a plan to expand nuclear power plants, including the construction of one SMR unit by 2038, and its announcement of a KRW 300 billion investment in the 2026 budget to support SMR technology development and licensing.

The expert group presented a phased strategy and key initiatives aimed at establishing a 'Gyeongsangbuk-do SMR ATLAS Cluster.' Through this, the direction of creating an industrial ecosystem encompassing the development, demonstration, and production of next-generation SMRs, based on corporate support, was concretized.

Furthermore, six technology development proposals, including additive manufacturing technology for the production of core SMR components, were proposed. These findings are expected to be widely utilized in the future SMR industry policy formulation and business planning of Gyeongbuk Province.

The briefing session was attended by 25 experts from industry, academia, research, and government, including Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Pohang Technology Promotion Agency, East Sea Rim Industry Research Institute, Gyeongbuk Research Institute, Kyungpook National University, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Korea Institute of Materials Science, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, POSCO E&C, SUSAN ENS, KOHIPSTECH, Handong Global University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, and the Korea Electrical Association. They exchanged diverse opinions on fostering the SMR industry.

Pohang TP Director Bae Young-ho said, “This final report will be a significant milestone in Gyeongsangbuk-do’s leap forward as a strategic base for the SMR industry.” He added, “Based on the expert group’s analysis and suggestions, we will strengthen the technology and industrial foundation so that local companies can actively participate in building the future nuclear power industry ecosystem.”
