경산~울산 간 고속도로는 기존에 경주시를 경유하는 경부고속도로 또는 밀양을 거쳐 우회해야 했던 노선을 경산과 울산을 직결하는 신규 노선으로 전환하는 사업이다. 노선이 개통될 경우 이동 거리는 약 23km, 소요 시간은 16분가량 단축될 전망이다.

KOSIS 통계에 따르면, 2022년 기준 제조업 중소기업의 물류비는 매출 대비 6.71%, 이 중 운송비는 57.9%로 총매출의 3.89%를 차지한다. 이를 경산시 자동차부품 기업(2023년 기준 2,000여 개, 총매출 5조 8,473억 원)에 적용하면 약 2,274억 원이 운송비로 지출되는 규모다.

고속도로가 개통될 경우 최소 31.5%의 운송 거리 단축 효과가 발생해 연간 약 716억 원의 물류비 절감이 가능할 것으로 추정된다. 절감된 재원이 기업 내 재투자될 경우 생산·고용 유발 등 연쇄적인 경제 효과로 지역경제 활성화에 크게 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

조현일 시장은 “경산과 울산의 접근성이 대폭 개선되면 자동차 산업뿐 아니라 조선·석유 등 울산 주력 산업 기업들도 경산에 더욱 쉽게 투자하고 정착할 수 있을 것”이라며 “울산시와 긴밀히 협력해 사업 확정과 조속한 추진을 이끌어내겠다”고 말했다.

한편, 지난 9월 국회에서는 조지연 국회의원을 비롯해 김기현·박성민·서범수 의원 등이 참여한 ‘경산~울산 고속도로 신설 정책토론회’가 열리는 등 정치권에서도 사업 추진을 적극 지원하고 있다. 본 사업은 연말 예정된 국토교통부 ‘제3차 고속도로 건설계획(2026~2030)’ 고시에 포함될 경우 공식 확정된다.

Meanwhile, the political community is actively supporting the project, with the National Assembly holding a "Gyeongsan-Ulsan Expressway Construction Policy Debate" in September, attended by Representatives Cho Ji-yeon, Kim Ki-hyun, Park Sung-min, and Seo Beom-soo. The project will be officially confirmed when it is included in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's "Third Expressway Construction Plan (2026-2030)" scheduled for the end of the year.
