【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항시의회(의장 김일만)는 17일 오후 의장실에서 국보 승격 10주년을 맞은 ‘포항 중성리 신라비’의 최초 발견자와 관련 공로자에게 감사패를 전달했다.

이번 감사패 수여식은 현존 최고(最古)의 신라 비석으로 평가받는 포항 중성리 신라비의 가치를 널리 알리는 데 기여한 이들의 노고를 기리기 위해 마련됐다. 수여 대상은 중성리 신라비를 최초로 발견한 김헌도 씨와, 발견 당시 특종 보도를 통해 신라비를 세상에 알린 언론인 이창형 씨다.

포항 중성리 신라비는 2009년 5월 11일 포항시 흥해읍 중성리 일원 도로 공사 현장에서 인근 주민인 김헌도 씨에 의해 발견됐다. 이후 김 씨의 고향 친구이자 당시 경북매일신문 편집국장이던 이창형 기자의 특종 보도를 계기로 학계와 일반 국민에게 알려지며 주목을 받았다. 그 결과 2012년 보물로 지정됐고, 2015년에는 국보 제318호로 승격됐다.

김일만 의장은 “포항 중성리 신라비는 현존 최고 신라 비석으로서 신라 초기의 정치·경제·문화상을 보여주는 대표적인 유물”이라며 “포항의 소중한 문화재가 세상 밖으로 나올 수 있도록 깊은 관심과 헌신적인 노력을 아끼지 않은 두 분께 깊은 감사와 존경의 마음을 전한다”고 말했다.

이어 “최근 포항 냉수리 신라비와 중성리 신라비, 울진 봉평리 신라비로 이뤄진 ‘신라 동해안 3비’의 유네스코 세계문화유산 등재 추진과 관련해, 이들 유적의 역사적·학술적 가치가 더욱 널리 알려질 수 있도록 포항시의회에서도 적극 협력하겠다”고 밝혔다.

On the afternoon of the 17th, the Pohang City Council (Chairman Kim Il-man) presented plaques of appreciation to the discoverers and other contributors to the Pohang Jungseong-ri Silla Stele, marking the 10th anniversary of its elevation to National Treasure status, in the Speaker's Office.

This ceremony honored those who contributed to raising awareness of the value of the Pohang Jungseong-ri Silla Stele, considered the oldest surviving Silla stele. The recipients were Kim Heon-do, who first discovered the Jungseong-ri Silla Stele, and Lee Chang-hyung, a journalist who broke the news of its discovery.

The Pohang Jungseong-ri Silla Stele was discovered on May 11, 2009, by Kim Heon-do, a local resident, at a road construction site in Jungseong-ri, Heunghae-eup, Pohang City. Afterwards, it gained attention from both academics and the general public thanks to a scoop by Lee Chang-hyung, a reporter and Kim's hometown friend and then editor-in-chief of the Gyeongbuk Daily Newspaper. As a result, it was designated a National Treasure in 2012 and elevated to National Treasure No. 318 in 2015.

Chairman Kim Il-man stated, "The Pohang Jungseong-ri Silla Stele is the oldest existing Silla stele and a representative artifact illustrating the political, economic, and cultural landscape of the early Silla period." He added, "I express my deepest gratitude and respect to the two individuals who have spared no effort and dedicated attention to bring Pohang's precious cultural assets to the world."

He added, "Regarding the recent push for the UNESCO World Heritage designation of the 'Three Silla East Coast Steles'—the Naengsu-ri and Jungseong-ri Silla Steles in Pohang and the Bongpyeong-ri Silla Steles in Uljin—the Pohang City Council will actively cooperate to ensure that the historical and academic value of these sites is further recognized."
