시의회는 “이번 지정이 이뤄지기까지 함께 힘써 준 김정재·이상휘 국회의원을 비롯해 경북도와 포항시, 정부 관계부처, 그리고 지지와 성원을 보내준 시민들께 감사드린다”며 “글로벌 공급 과잉과 미국의 철강 관세 부과로 어려움을 겪는 지역 철강산업에 새로운 전환점이 될 것”이라고 기대감을 표했다.
또한 시의회는 “선제대응지역 지정으로 긴급 경영 안정자금과 정책금융 지원, 지방투자촉진 보조금 비율 상향, 협력업체·소상공인 대상 우대 보증 프로그램 등 다양한 정부 지원이 신속히 추진될 것”이라며 “이를 통해 철강산업과 지역경제의 위기를 극복하고 지속 가능한 성장 기반을 마련할 수 있을 것”이라고 강조했다.
특히 “포항은 철강산업을 토대로 대한민국 산업화를 이끌어온 대표적인 철강도시”라며 “이번 지정이 단기적 지원에 머물지 않고 친환경 철강 전환, 고부가가치 산업 구조 개편 등 근본적인 산업 재편의 계기가 되도록 의회 차원에서 관계기관과 지역 기업들과 협력해 적극 지원하겠다”고 밝혔다.
한편, 포항시의회는 지난 2월 열린 제321회 임시회에서 ‘미국 철강제품 관세 부과에 따른 철강산업 위기 범정부 공동대응 촉구 결의안’을 채택하고, 정부에 포항시의 산업위기 대응 특별지역 지정을 요구하는 등 지역 철강산업 보호와 위기 극복을 위해 꾸준히 활동해 왔다.

Meanwhile, the Pohang City Council has consistently worked to protect the local steel industry and overcome the crisis, including adopting a "Resolution Urging a Joint Government-Wide Response to the Steel Industry Crisis Arising from the Imposition of US Steel Product Tariffs" at its 321st extraordinary session held in February and requesting the government to designate Pohang as a special zone for industrial crisis response.
