이번 세미나는 철강산업 쇠퇴와 이차전지 산업 침체 등 지역 주력산업의 위기에 대응해 신성장 동력 확보와 산업 구조의 다변화를 모색하기 위해 마련됐다. 세미나에는 포항시의회 의원들과 시청 일자리경제국 및 환경국 관계자, 그리고 그래핀 산업 전문가들이 참석했다.

이날 세미나에서는 홍병희 ㈜그래핀스퀘어 대표가 ‘그래핀 소재 양산기술이 이끌 전략산업 혁신’을 주제로 발표했다. 홍 대표는 발표에서 "포항은 그래핀 산업의 글로벌 중심지로 도약할 수 있는 최적지"라고 강조하며, 포스텍의 연구 역량과 가속기 기반 실시간 구조 분석 능력, 국가산단의 인프라, 환경 규제 측면에서의 유연성 등을 포항의 핵심 경쟁력으로 꼽았다.

또한 CES 2024에서 혁신상을 받은 ‘충전식 투명 그래핀 멀티쿠커’ 등 그래핀 응용 제품도 함께 시연되어 참석자들의 이목을 집중시켰다.

홍 대표는 “그래핀 시장은 현재 약 13억 달러 규모에서 2034년에는 98억 달러에 이를 것으로 전망된다”며, “포항만의 차별화된 지원 정책과 독자적인 전략이 필요하다”고 밝혔다.

세미나에 참석한 의원들은 “그래핀 산업은 포항의 미래 핵심 산업으로, 철강 이후를 대비하는 대안이 될 것”이라고 평가하며 “국내 최초 그래핀 대량 합성 기술을 상용화한 블루밸리 국가산단의 성과를 토대로, 향후 ‘그래핀 밸리’ 조성 등 지속적인 정책 추진에 힘을 모으겠다”고 밝혔다.

Pohang City Council Focuses on ‘Graphene Industry’ as Future New Growth Engine

On the afternoon of June 23, the Pohang City Council member research group ‘Pohang City Local Autonomy Development Research Group’ (Representative Baek Kang-hoon) held a seminar at the Change Up Ground Education Center with the theme of “Graphene, Dressing Pohang’s Future – New Material Industry and Regional Economic Innovation.”

This seminar was organized to seek new growth engines and diversification of industrial structures in response to crises in regional key industries such as the decline of the steel industry and the slump in the secondary battery industry. The lawmakers who attended the seminar evaluated that “the graphene industry is a future core industry for Pohang and will be an alternative to prepare for the post-steel era,” and added, “Based on the achievements of the Blue Valley National Industrial Complex, which commercialized Korea’s first graphene mass synthesis technology, we will continue to work together to promote policies such as the creation of ‘Graphene Valley’ in the future.”
