국민의힘 임이자 국회의원(국민의힘 경북도당위원장. 경북 문경상주)은 2일 도당위원장 취임 전 기자들과 만난 자리에서 “(군위군의 대구 편입 특별법 제정) 9월 국회 제정 및 처리는 어려워도 애초 신공항 유치 당시 드렸던 약속이기 때문에 하기는 할 것이다. 경북도 국회의원들끼리도 이 문제에 대하여 이야기를 한 바 있는데 대체적으로 그런 기류로 의견이 모아졌다”고 말했다. 

다만 임 위원장은 “일각의 우려를 알고 있다. 그러나 편입되는 부분에 대해서는 공항을 우리가 하는 전제로 한 부분이 있어서 그게(신공항 그림, 특별법 통과 등) 어느 정도 좀 부각이 되었으면 좋겠다.  그래야 지금 마음 상해 계신 도민들을 우리가 설득하기도 쉽고, 그렇게 되면 이제 공항이 실질적으로 하는 거니까 ‘그래 가자’하면 문제 될 것이 없다고 본다”면서 “열 세분의 의원들 의견은 그렇게 모아져 있다.일단 당이 어수선한 상황인데 어느 정도 정리가 되고  안정화되고 나면 모아진 중지대로 갈 것 ”이라고 거듭 강조했다. 

취수원 문제와 관련해서는 조심스러운 입장을 나타냈다. 특히, 홍준표 대구시장과 김장호 구미시장간, 지방과 지방간의 갈등이 있다는 지적에 대하여는 “그렇게 보지는 않는다”고 말했다. 

그러면서 “어쨌든 이제 시장님도 바뀌었고 대구 시장도 바뀌었고, 어쩌면 근본적인 문제를 갖다가 좀 짚고 갖고 해결하자라는 그런 차원의 상황이라고 본다. 또 이 부분에 경북지사도 있지 않느냐. 지사의 입장도 있고, 다들 각 자의 할 일이 있지 않겠느냐. 그런 차원에서 갈등이라고 말씀하시지 마시고 근본적인 원인을 해결하기 위해서 서로가 다시 한 번 또 들여다보고 면밀하게 검토해 보자는 것으로 이해하자”고 말했다. 

다만 그는 “앞으로 경북 지사님 얘기도 좀 들어봐야 되고 또 홍 회장님의 입장은 대충 알고 있습니다마는 그래서 어느 게 더 근본적인 해결책이 되는가 보면서 도당위원장으로서도 그 역할에 따라 조율도 해보고 하겠다. 제가 지금 누구 생각이 맞는다고 하는 것은 오바다 ”라고 덧붙였다.
