【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=국민의힘 김병욱 의원(포항시남구울릉군,국회 교육위원회 소속)은 교육부로부터 제출받은 자료에 따르면, 아무 쓰임 없이 방치된 폐교가 전국 351곳에 달하는 것(2022년 3월 기준)으로 나타났다고 28일 밝혔다.

김 의원에 따르면 지역별로는 전남이 85곳으로 가장 많았으며, 경남이 74곳, 경북 57곳, 강원 45곳, 충북 22곳, 경기 18곳, 충남 17곳, 제주 8곳, 전북 7곳, 부산 6곳, 인천 5곳, 울산 4곳, 서울 2곳, 대전 1곳 순이었다.

반면 대구와 광주, 세종은 폐교된 학교 시설을 모두 교육용 또는 문화시설, 사회복지시설, 소득증대 및 공동이용시설 등으로 활용하고 있었다.

각 시도교육청은 인구감소와 고령화로 인해 폐교를 자체 활용할 여력이 없어 대부분 매각이나 대부 계획을 추진하고 있다. 하지만 폐교의 가치가 크지 않아 매수인을 찾기가 어렵고, 학교가 문을 닫으면서 주변 인구도 감소하면서 뚜렷한 폐교 활용방안을 찾기 어려운 실정이다.

김병욱 의원은 “학령인구 감소로 폐교는 더이상 지방 소도시만의 문제가 아니다"라며, "방치된 폐교가 혐오시설로 전락하지 않도록 폐교시설을 활용하려는 자에게 교육당국이 보조금을 지원하는 등, 폐교가 지역의 새로운 활력소로 거듭날 수 있는 방안을 강구해야 한다”라고 말했다.
