경북교육청은 이 공간들을 효율적으로 활용하기 위해 외부 주체들과의 적극적인 협력에 나서고 있다. 이를 통해 지역 재생과 공동체 회복에 이바지하는 살아 있는 생활·문화 공간이 탄생했다.

임종식 교육감은 “폐교가 지역사회의 여러 주체와 협력해 새로운 가치를 창출하는 것은 곧 교육과 지역이 상생하는 길”이라고 강조했다. 버려진 학교가 희망의 터전으로 바뀌는 과정은 곧 지역의 미래를 다시 쓰는 작업이다.

폐교 활용 우수 사례

중증장애인 자립지원센터, 어모초등학교

2007년 폐교된 김천 어모초등학교는 2008년부터 성인 발달장애인을 위한 지원센터로 운영된다. 직지사복지재단이 위탁하며, 운동장에는 주민을 위한 ‘나눔의 숲’도 조성됐다.

농업기술 교육의 장, 화남초등학교

1995년 폐교된 안동 화남초등학교는 2020년부터 농업기술 교육 시설로 활용된다. 야생동물 퇴치와 농기계 실습 교육 등으로 지역 농업 발전과 소득 증대에 기여하고 있다.

보현산 녹색체험터, 자천중학교

2016년 폐교된 영천 자천중학교는 ‘보현산 녹색체험터’로 재탄생했다. 그린 도서관, 편백 놀이터, 짚라인 등 다양한 시설이 마련돼 주민과 학생 모두 이용할 수 있다. 최근에는 메타버스 체험관과 디지털 추억교실도 운영된다.

전통문화예술 중심, 기산아트타운

1999년 폐교된 기산초등학교는 경북과학대학교가 운영하며 전통문화예술체험학교로 활용된다. 금속공예, 목공예, 전통음식 만들기, 사물놀이 등 30여 개 프로그램으로 지역 전통문화 확산의 거점이 됐다.

2010년 폐교된 태하분교장은 2017년 ‘수토역사전시관’으로 개관했다. 수토제를 주제로 실물 크기 수토선과 디지털 체험이 마련돼, 학생 학습과 주민 자긍심 강화에 활용된다.

폐교, 상생과 지역 발전의 거점으로

경북교육청은 폐교가 지역의 다양한 주체들과 손잡고 새로운 가치를 창출할 수 있도록 법적·제도적 기반을 마련하고, 맞춤형 활용 방안을 제시하며 적극적으로 지원하고 있다.

한때 멈춰 있던 공간이었던 폐교는 이제 지역에 활력을 불어넣는 성장 동력, 그리고 협력과 상생의 상징으로 다시 서고 있다.

경북교육청은 앞으로도 ‘버려진 공간에서 다시 태어나는 희망의 터전’이라는 비전을 실천하며, 폐교를 지역 재생과 미래 세대 교육을 잇는 연결고리로 만들어 갈 계획이다.

Eomo Elementary School in Gimcheon, which closed in 2007, has been operating as a support center for adults with developmental disabilities since 2008. The Jikjisa Welfare Foundation is entrusted with the project, and a "Sharing Forest" has been created on the playground for residents.

Hwanam Elementary School, a Center for Agricultural Technology Education

Andong Hwanam Elementary School, closed in 1995, will be used as an agricultural technology education facility starting in 2020. It contributes to local agricultural development and increased income through programs such as wildlife extermination and hands-on training in agricultural machinery.

Bohyeonsan Green Experience Center, Jacheon Middle School

Yeongcheon Jacheon Middle School, closed in 2016, has been reborn as the "Bohyeonsan Green Experience Center." Various facilities, including a green library, cypress playground, and zipline, are available for both residents and students. Recently, a metaverse experience center and a digital memory classroom have also been opened.

Gisan Art Town, a Center for Traditional Culture and Arts

Gisan Elementary School, closed in 1999, is operated by Kyungpook National University of Science and Technology and is now a traditional culture and arts experience center. With over 30 programs, including metalwork, woodworking, traditional food making, and samulnori (traditional Korean percussion music), it has become a hub for the spread of local traditional culture.

Ulleungdo Development History Exhibition Hall, Ulleung Middle School Taeha Branch

The Taeha Branch School, closed in 2010, opened as the "Suto History Exhibition Hall" in 2017. Themed around the Suto Festival, the museum features life-size Suto ships and digital experiences, fostering student learning and fostering community pride.
