경북 최초 안전체험관, 연간 2만 명 찾는 교육 명소

대표 사례는 의성안전체험관과 경주안전체험관이다. 2021년 개관한 의성안전체험관(구 다인초 달제분교)은 경북 최초의 종합 안전체험관으로 지진·소방·교통·자연재난 등 실습형 프로그램을 운영한다.

2022년 문을 연 경주안전체험관(구 안강북부초)은 부지 1만4천여㎡ 규모에 25개 체험 프로그램을 갖추며 경북 동남권 안전교육의 중심지로 자리 잡았다. 지난해 정식 개관 이후 연간 2만 명 이상이 찾으며 교육 만족도도 높게 나타났다.

온라인학교 개교, 지역교육격차 해소 성과

올해 3월 개교한 경북온라인학교(구 남산초 삼성분교)는 지역 간 교육격차 해소를 목표로 운영되고 있다. 

첫 학기에는 44개 학교 740여 명이 78개 강좌에 참여했으며, 울릉도 학생들도 수업을 들었다. 수요조사에서는 1천 명 이상이 신청해 높은 관심을 확인했다. 

소규모 교사 인력으로 운영되지만 강좌와 학생 수가 꾸준히 늘며 전국적인 온라인 교육 모델로 평가받고 있다.

다문화학생 지원, 한국어교육센터 운영

경주한국어교육센터(구 노월초)는 2023년 3월 전국 최초 공립형 대안교육 위탁기관으로 개원했다. 

중도입국 학생과 외국인 가정 자녀에게 수준별 한국어 수업과 특기적성 프로그램을 제공하며 이주배경 학생들의 한국사회 적응을 돕고 있다.

교육가족 복지 확대, 캠핑장 3곳 조성

경북교육청은 폐교를 활용해 포항·김천·영덕에 오토캠핑장을 조성, 2022년부터 운영 중이다. 저렴한 이용료로 교육가족과 도민에게 호응을 얻고 있으며, 영주 남대분교 부지에도 12면 규모의 캠핑장이 들어서 2026년 개장 예정이다.

대규모 미래교육 인프라 건립

구미시 구 경북과학고 부지에는 ‘모든 것은 수학이다’를 주제로 한 수학문화관이 건립돼 2025년 개관 예정이다. 또한 구 임봉초 부지에는 총 378억 원을 투입해 유아교육진흥원이 들어서 2027년 문을 열 예정이다.

임종식 교육감 “폐교는 미래교육 자원”

임종식 교육감은 “폐교는 단순히 버려진 공간이 아니라 지역의 역사와 추억이 담긴 소중한 자산”이라며 “교육적 가치를 최우선으로 고려해 학생과 지역민에게 새로운 학습·체험 기회를 제공하고 있다”고 말했다.

또한 “타당성 분석과 활용 협의체 운영, 지속적 예산 투자로 장기적 활용 모델을 구축해가겠다”고 강조했다.

The Gyeongbuk Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Jong-sik) is garnering national attention for converting closed schools into educational assets and utilizing them for various educational facilities.

Gyeongbuk's First Safety Experience Center: An Educational Attraction Attracting 20,000 Visitors Annually

Typical examples include the Uiseong Safety Experience Center and the Gyeongju Safety Experience Center. The Uiseong Safety Experience Center (formerly Dain Elementary School Dalje Branch), which opened in 2021, is the first comprehensive safety experience center in Gyeongbuk and offers hands-on programs on earthquakes, firefighting, traffic, and natural disasters.

The Gyeongju Safety Experience Center (formerly Angangbukbu Elementary School), which opened in 2022, spans 14,000 square meters and features 25 hands-on programs, establishing itself as a hub for safety education in the southeastern part of Gyeongbuk. Since its official opening last year, it has attracted over 20,000 visitors annually, demonstrating high educational satisfaction.

Opening of Online School Results in Bridging Regional Educational Gap

The Gyeongbuk Online School (formerly Namsan Elementary School's Samsung Branch), which opened in March of this year, aims to bridge the educational gap between regions.

In its first semester, approximately 740 students from 44 schools participated in 78 courses, including students from Ulleungdo Island. A demand survey showed strong interest, with over 1,000 applicants.

Although operated with a small teaching staff, the number of courses and students has steadily increased, earning it recognition as a national model for online education.

Support for Multicultural Students and Operation of a Korean Language Education Center

The Gyeongju Korean Language Education Center (formerly Nowol Elementary School) opened in March 2023 as the nation's first public alternative education institution.

It provides level-based Korean language classes and specialized aptitude programs to immigrant students and children from foreign families, helping them adapt to Korean society.

Expanding Education Family Welfare, Creating Three Campgrounds

The Gyeongbuk Office of Education has utilized closed schools to create auto campgrounds in Pohang, Gimcheon, and Yeongdeok, operating them since 2022. Their affordable fees have been a popular choice for education families and residents. A 12-site campground will also be built on the site of the Namdae Branch School in Yeongju, scheduled to open in 2026.

Building Large-Scale Future Education Infrastructure

A Mathematics Culture Center themed "Everything is Mathematics" will be built on the site of the former Gyeongbuk Science High School in Gumi City, scheduled to open in 2025. Furthermore, a 37.8 billion won investment will be made to establish the Korea Institute for Early Childhood Education at the former Imbong Elementary School site, slated to open in 2027.

Superintendent Lim Jong-sik: "Closed Schools Are Resources for Future Education"

Superintendent Lim Jong-sik stated, "Closed schools are not simply abandoned spaces, but valuable assets imbued with local history and memories. We prioritize educational value and provide students and local residents with new learning and experiential opportunities."

He also emphasized, “We will establish a long-term utilization model through feasibility analysis, operation of a utilization consultative body, and continuous budget investment.”
