장 회장은 이와 함께 세계 각국의 철강사 CEO들과 철강업계가 당면한 주요 현안을 논의하고 철강산업의 지속가능발전 방안을 모색하는 등 글로벌 경영 행보를 펼쳤다.

세계철강협회는 철강산업의 이해와 이익 증진 활동을 목표로 하는 철강업계 대표기구로, 전 세계 철강사는 물론 지역별 철강협회, 연구기관 등 총 155개 회원사들이 활발히 활동하고 있다.

장 회장은 13일(현지시간) 세계철강협회 집행위원회 회의에서 글로벌 철강사 CEO들과 수소환원제철 공동 R&D 프로그램, CCS(탄소포집저장) 프로젝트, 탄소배출량 측정기준의 글로벌 표준화, 미래 자율주행 차체 개발 프로젝트 등 글로벌 철강 현안 및 협회 활동 성과를 공유하고 향후 발전 방향에 대해 심도 있게 논의했다.

이날 장 회장은 "철강산업의 탄소중립 실현을 위한 다양한 방안들이 있으나 탄소중립을 앞당기기 위해서는 공평하고 투명한 방식으로 저탄소 철강 제조 방법에 대한 합의를 이끌어 내야 한다"고 강조하고, 협회 주도로 추진 중인 탄소배출량 측정방식의 글로벌 표준화를 보다 속도감 있게 실행해 나가자고 당부했다.

이어 장 회장은 14일 세계철강협회 총회에 참석해 저탄소 혁신 기술과 철강산업의 지속가능성장 방안을 공유하는 시간을 가졌으며, 15일 열린 회원사 회의에서 세계철강협회 신임 집행위원에 선임됐다.

향후 장 회장은 △저탄소 기술 및 제품 개발 △환경 △안전 등 세계철강협회 운영 정책과 방향을 결정하는 집행위원으로 활동하게 되며, 임기는 3년이다.

포스코는 세계철강협회 스틸리어워드(Steelie Awards) 시상식에서 총 6개 부문 중 △기술혁신 △커뮤니케이션 △교육·훈련 3개 부문에서 최고상을 수상하는 쾌거도 올렸다. 포스코가 스틸리어워드에서 3개 부문을 동시 석권한 것은 이번이 처음이다.

‘기술혁신’ 부문에 선정된 ‘경제적이고 친환경적인 자동차강판 솔루션기술, PosZET® 기술’은 기가스틸이 사용된 자동차 부품의 용접부 품질을 개선한 기술이다. 부가적인 후처리 공정을 생략할 수 있어 탄소저감 효과를 얻을 수 있다. 특히 이 기술은 올해 2월 세계적 권위의 학술지 ‘네이처 커뮤니케이션즈(Nature Communications)’에도 등재된 바 있다.

‘커뮤니케이션’ 부문에서 최고상을 받은 ‘판타스틸(Fantasteel, Fantasy와 Steel의 합성어)’은 포스코가 철강을 통해 미래 세대가 꿈꾸는 ‘더 좋은 세상’을 만들겠다는 의미를 담아 제작한 광고 캠페인으로, 철에 대한 서사를 게임을 연상시키는 3D 애니메이션으로 구현해 뛰어난 메시지 전달력과 참신함이 돋보였다는 평가를 받았다.

마지막으로 ‘교육·훈련’ 부문의 ‘직원의 혁신 마인드 내재화를 위한 QSS(Quality Safety Stability) 교육과정’은 신입사원, 개선리더, 퍼실리테이터(Facilitator), 관리자 등 계층별 맞춤형 교육과정이라는 점에서 높은 평가를 받았다. QSS는 생산현장의 직원들이 주체가 되어 개선을 실천하고 생산효율을 높이는 포스코 고유의 일하는 방식으로 포스코는 지난 20여 년간 QSS 활동을 지속해 오고 있다.

한편 포스코는 세계적인 철강 전문 분석 기관인 WSD(World Steel Dynamics)가 선정하는 '세계에서 가장 경쟁력 있는 철강사’ 1위에 14년 연속 이름을 올린 바 있으며, 올해 4월에는 저탄소 생산체제 전환 노력을 인정 받아 세계철강협회 지속가능성 최우수 멤버(Sustainability Champion)에 3년 연속 선정됐다.

Chairman Jang In-hwa of POSCO Group was appointed as a new executive committee member at the second half of the World Steel Association (worldsteel) regular meeting held in Brussels, Belgium, and discussed major issues facing the steel industry with CEOs of steel companies from around the world and explored ways for sustainable development of the steel industry, thereby carrying out global management activities.

The World Steel Association is a representative organization of the steel industry that aims to promote understanding and interests of the steel industry, and a total of 155 member companies including steel companies around the world, regional steel associations, and research institutes are actively involved.

POSCO also won the grand prize in three categories out of a total of six categories at the World Steel Association Steelie Awards ceremony: technological innovation, communication, and education and training. This is the first time that POSCO has won three categories at the Steelier Awards.

The ‘PosZET® Technology, an economical and eco-friendly automotive steel sheet solution technology’ selected in the ‘Technical Innovation’ category is a technology that improves the quality of welds in automotive parts using Giga Steel. It can achieve a carbon reduction effect by omitting additional post-processing processes. In particular, this technology was also listed in the world-renowned academic journal ‘Nature Communications’ in February of this year.

QSS is POSCO’s unique working method in which employees at production sites take the lead in implementing improvements and increasing production efficiency, and POSCO has been conducting QSS activities for the past 20 years.

Meanwhile, POSCO has been ranked first for 14 consecutive years as the ‘World’s Most Competitive Steelmaker’ by WSD (World Steel Dynamics), a global steel analysis organization, and in April of this year, it was selected as the World Steel Association’s Sustainability Champion for the third consecutive year in recognition of its efforts to transition to a low-carbon production system.
