【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포스코 포항제철소 해양환경지킴이봉사단이 지난 주말 포항시 북구 이가리 해변에서 해양환경 정화활동을 펼치며 깨끗한 바다 만들기에 힘을 보탰다.

이날 봉사활동에는 봉사단원과 가족 등 29명이 참여해 이가리 마을회관에서 출발, 해변을 따라 이동하며 플로깅과 비치코밍 활동을 진행했다. 플로깅은 조깅을 하며 쓰레기를 줍는 환경 보호 활동이며, 비치코밍은 해변을 따라 표류물과 해양쓰레기를 수거하는 활동이다. 참가자들은 궂은 날씨 속에서도 약 5시간 동안 정화활동을 이어가며 해양쓰레기 수거에 구슬땀을 흘렸다.

2023년 창단된 포항제철소 해양환경지킴이봉사단은 매년 약 30회에 이르는 정기 봉사활동을 통해 영일대, 이가리, 구룡포 등 포항 지역 주요 해변의 환경 정화에 앞장서고 있다. 이와 함께 그린피스 등 외부 환경단체와 협력한 환경 캠페인, 산불 피해 복구 활동 등 다양한 사회공헌 활동을 통해 지역사회 환경 보호에 기여하고 있다.

포항제철소 제강설비부 김영학 단장은 “한파 속에서도 깨끗한 포항 바다를 지키기 위해 자발적으로 참여한 단원들의 실천에 큰 보람을 느낀다”며 “앞으로도 뜨거운 열정으로 깨끗한 환경을 지키기 위한 발걸음을 멈추지 않겠다”고 말했다.

한편 포스코 포항제철소는 교육·문화·환경 개선 등 다양한 분야에서 지역사회와 상생하는 사회공헌 활동을 지속적으로 추진해오고 있다. 특히 최근 3년간 포항제철소 직원과 봉사단은 대통령 표창, 경상북도지사상, 포항시장상 등 총 26건의 수상 실적을 기록하며 공로를 인정받았다.

The POSCO Pohang Works Marine Environment Volunteer Group participated in a marine environment cleanup activity at Igari Beach in Buk-gu, Pohang, last weekend, contributing to the cleanup of the ocean.

Twenty-nine volunteers, including members and their families, participated in the activity. Starting from the Igari Community Center, they moved along the beach, engaging in plogging and beachcombing activities. Plogging is an environmental activity that involves picking up trash while jogging, while beachcombing involves collecting driftwood and marine debris along the beach. Despite the inclement weather, the participants worked tirelessly for approximately five hours to collect marine debris.

Founded in 2023, the Pohang Works Marine Environment Volunteer Group takes the lead in environmental cleanups of major Pohang beaches, including Yeongildae, Igari, and Guryongpo, through approximately 30 regular volunteer activities annually. They also contribute to the protection of the local community's environment through various social contribution activities, including environmental campaigns in collaboration with external environmental organizations like Greenpeace and forest fire recovery efforts.

Kim Young-hak, Head of the Steelmaking Equipment Division at Pohang Works, said, "We are deeply rewarded by the volunteers' voluntary participation in protecting the clean waters of Pohang even during the cold spell. We will continue to passionately strive to preserve a clean environment."

Meanwhile, POSCO Pohang Works has consistently pursued social contribution activities that foster mutual growth with the local community in various fields, including education, culture, and environmental improvement. Over the past three years, Pohang Works employees and volunteers have received a total of 26 awards, including the Presidential Citation, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor's Award, and the Pohang Mayor's Award, recognizing their contributions.
