【브레이크뉴스 영덕】박영재 기자=‘경북 동해안 유네스코 세계지질공원(면적 2,693.69㎢)’이 유네스코 세계지질공원으로 공식 지정된다. 이는 포항, 경주, 영덕, 울진 일원에 걸쳐 있는 지질자원이 세계적인 가치를 인정받은 것으로, 경상북도는 청송에 이어 두 번째로 세계지질공원을 보유하게 됐다.

영덕군은 지난 10일 밤(현지 시각) 프랑스 파리에서 열린 제221차 유네스코 집행이사회에서 지정 안건이 의결됐으며, 오는 17일 공식 통보를 통해 세계지질공원 지위가 부여된다고 14일 밝혔다.

이번 지정은 북한의 백두산과 함께 한반도의 대표적인 지질유산이 동시에 세계지질공원으로 등재된 사례로, 국제사회가 한반도의 지질학적 가치를 인정한 데 큰 의미가 있다.

‘유네스코 세계지질공원’은 단순한 지질학적 가치뿐 아니라 생태·역사·문화적 자원과의 연계성, 지역사회 협력, 지속 가능한 관리 체계 등 다양한 기준을 종합적으로 평가해 지정된다.

경북 동해안 지질공원은 신생대 화석산지, 동아시아의 지체구조 형성 과정, 화성활동의 흔적 등 풍부한 지질학적 특성을 보유하고 있으며, 학술·교육·관광적 측면에서 모두 우수하다는 평가를 받았다.

이번 지정은 2023년 6월 유네스코에 의향서를 제출한 이후, 2024년 7월 그리스·인도네시아 평가단의 현장 실사, 9월 베트남 까오방에서 열린 세계지질공원이사회 심의를 거쳐 최종 확정됐다.

영덕군은 그동안 경상북도와 협력해 포항시, 경주시, 울진군과 함께 ‘동해안 지질공원 사무국’을 중심으로 지질공원센터를 운영해왔다. 안내소 및 탐방 인프라 구축, 지질교육 및 체험 프로그램 운영, 지역 기관·주민과의 협력 등을 통해 유네스코 기준을 충족시키기 위한 노력을 꾸준히 이어왔다.

김광열 영덕군수는 “2015년 국가지질공원 신청을 시작으로 10년 동안 쌓아온 결실”이라며 “세계지질공원 등재를 계기로 지역 관광 활성화와 국가 생태탐방로 조성, 생태관광지역 육성에 더욱 힘을 쏟겠다”고 밝혔다.

Gyeongbuk East Coast UNESCO Global Geopark Designation Confirmed… Yeongdeok-gun “10 Years of Efforts Result”

The ‘Gyeongbuk East Coast UNESCO Global Geopark (area 2,693.69㎢)’ has been officially designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark. This is because the geological resources spanning Pohang, Gyeongju, Yeongdeok, and Uljin have been recognized for their global value, and Gyeongsangbuk-do has become the second province to have a Global Geopark after Cheongsong.

Yeongdeok-gun announced on the 14th that the designation agenda was approved at the 221st UNESCO Executive Board held in Paris, France on the night of the 10th (local time), and that the status of Global Geopark will be granted through an official notification on the 17th.

This designation is a case where a representative geological heritage of the Korean Peninsula, along with Mt. Baekdu in North Korea, has been simultaneously registered as a Global Geopark, and is very significant in that the international community has recognized the geological value of the Korean Peninsula.

The UNESCO Global Geopark is designated by comprehensively evaluating various criteria such as connectivity with ecological, historical, and cultural resources, cooperation with local communities, and sustainable management systems, in addition to simple geological values.

The Gyeongbuk East Coast Geopark has abundant geological characteristics such as Cenozoic fossil sites, the formation of East Asian tectonic structures, and traces of igneous activity, and has been evaluated as excellent in terms of academics, education, and tourism.

This designation was finalized after submitting a letter of intent to UNESCO in June 2023, conducting an on-site inspection by the Greek and Indonesian evaluation teams in July 2024, and deliberation by the Global Geopark Board held in Cao Bang, Vietnam in September.

Yeongdeok-gun has been operating the Geopark Center centered on the ‘East Coast Geopark Office’ in cooperation with Gyeongsangbuk-do, Pohang-si, Gyeongju-si, and Uljin-gun. It has continued its efforts to meet UNESCO standards through the establishment of information centers and exploration infrastructure, operation of geological education and experience programs, and cooperation with local organizations and residents.

Yeongdeok County Governor Kim Gwang-yeol said, “This is the result of 10 years of work since we applied for national geopark status in 2015,” and added, “With the designation as a World Geopark as an opportunity, we will put more effort into revitalizing local tourism, creating national ecological trails, and fostering eco-tourism areas.”
