계명대 실크로드연구원이 주최하고, 한국건축역사학회·한국미술사학회가 공동 주관하며, 경상북도가 후원하는 ‘2025 경주 APEC 개최 기념 실크로드 인문학 국제학술회의’가 오는 10월 16~17일 경주 라한셀렉트 호텔 다이너스티홀에서 개최된다.

이번 학술회의의 주제는 “석굴암, 통일신라 불교미술과 건축의 정수에서 세계의 문화유산으로”로, 통일신라의 건축기술과 조형미를 집약한 석굴암의 세계적 가치를 국제 석학들과 함께 논의한다. 석굴암은 1995년 유네스코 세계문화유산에 등재되며 세계적 보편성을 인정받았다.

기조연설은 전 한국예술종합학교 총장 김봉렬 교수와 서울대 인문대학 이주형 교수가 맡는다. 김 교수는 “석굴암, 아시아 석굴운동의 종착점”을 주제로 사상적·미학적 의미를, 이 교수는 “존재의 심원: 석굴 성소의 상징과 의미”를 주제로 불교 조각사적 가치와 보편성을 조명한다.

국내외 석학 12명이 주제 발표를 하고, 각 발표마다 전문 토론자가 참여해 총 24명이 심도 깊은 논의를 진행한다. 주요 논의 주제로는 ▲석굴암 건축의 독창성과 동아시아 건축사상의 교차점 ▲석굴암 보존과 복원의 역사 ▲아시아 석굴사원 및 불교 조각사 맥락에서의 석굴암 ▲석굴암 이후 한국 불교조각 영향 등이다. 이를 통해 실크로드 문화 교류와 문명사적 쟁점에 대한 폭넓은 논의가 기대된다.

이번 학술회의는 단순 학문적 성과를 넘어, 경주와 경상북도의 문화유산을 세계 무대에서 재조명하고, APEC 정상회의와 연계해 국제적 역사도시로서의 이미지를 강화하는 계기가 될 전망이다. 또한 석굴암 보존과 활용 방안에 대한 학술적 통찰을 제공함으로써 미래적 활용 가능성도 모색한다.

참가 신청은 9월 23~26일 계명대 실크로드연구원 홈페이지에서 선착순으로 접수 가능하며, 총 190명까지 참여할 수 있다.

신진교 계명대 실크로드연구원장은 “이번 국제학술회의는 석굴암을 중심으로 인문학적 성찰을 확장하고, 국제 학술 교류를 심화하는 뜻깊은 자리가 될 것”이라며, “석굴암의 보편적 가치가 세계사 속에서 더욱 확산되기를 바란다”고 밝혔다.

Seokguram Grotto International Academic Conference to be Held in Commemoration of 2025 APEC Gyeongju

Ahead of the 2025 APEC Summit, an international academic conference will reexamine the historical, artistic, and cultural significance of Seokguram Grotto, a World Cultural Heritage site.

Hosted by the Silk Road Institute at Keimyung University, co-organized by the Korean Society of Architectural History and the Korean Society of Art History, and sponsored by Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, the "2025 Gyeongju APEC Silk Road Humanities International Academic Conference" will be held on October 16-17 at the Dynasty Hall of the Lahan Select Hotel in Gyeongju.

The theme of the conference is "Seokguram Grotto: From the Essence of Unified Silla Buddhist Art and Architecture to a World Cultural Heritage Site." The conference will feature discussions with international scholars on the global value of Seokguram Grotto, a culmination of Unified Silla's architectural techniques and aesthetics. Seokguram Grotto was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995, further recognizing its universal value.

The keynote speeches will be delivered by Professor Kim Bong-ryeol, former president of the Korea National University of Arts, and Professor Lee Ju-hyung of the College of Humanities at Seoul National University. Professor Kim will address the ideological and aesthetic significance of Seokguram Grotto, "The End of the Asian Grotto Movement," while Professor Lee will highlight the historical value and universality of Buddhist sculpture with "The Profundity of Existence: Symbolism and Meaning of the Seokguram Shrine."

Twelve leading scholars from Korea and abroad will present keynote speeches, and expert panelists will participate in each presentation, leading to a total of 24 in-depth discussions. Key topics include: ▲The originality of Seokguram Grotto's architecture and the intersection of East Asian architectural thought; ▲The history of Seokguram's preservation and restoration; ▲Seokguram Grotto in the context of Asian grotto temples and Buddhist sculpture; ▲The influence of Korean Buddhist sculpture after Seokguram Grotto. This is expected to foster a broad discussion on cultural exchange on the Silk Road and the historical context of civilization.

This conference is expected to go beyond mere academic achievements and serve as an opportunity to re-evaluate the cultural heritage of Gyeongju and North Gyeongsang Province on the global stage. In conjunction with the APEC Summit, it will also serve as an opportunity to strengthen Gyeongju's image as an international historic city. Furthermore, by providing academic insights into the preservation and utilization of Seokguram Grotto, it will explore its future potential.

Registration for the conference will be open on a first-come, first-served basis from September 23rd to 26th on the Keimyung University Silk Road Institute website, with a maximum of 190 participants.
