지난 1월 15일 정의당 김종철 대표는 당무상 면담을 위해 장혜영 의원을 만나 식사를 한 뒤 차량을 기다리는 과정에서 성추행을 저지른 것으로 알려진다.

정의당 젠더인권본부장인 배복주 부대표는 “여러 차례 피해자, 가해자와의 면담을 통해 조사했고 가해자인 김 대표도 모든 사실을 인정했다”며 “이 사건은 다툼의 여지가 없는 명백한 성추행 사건”이라고 규정했다.

이 같은 사건이 발생한 가운데 정의당 대구시당은 보도자료를 통해 “당대표의 성추행 소식을 전하게 되어 부끄럽다”며 소식을 전했다.

정의당 대구시당은 “정의당은 원칙적이고 단호하게 이 사안을 대할 것이며 피해자의 의사를 최대한 존중하고 일상의 회복을 최우선 과제로 삼겠다”는 메시지를 전하며 “가해자는 무관용의 원칙으로 엄중하게 처벌할 것”이라고 강조했다.
