이날 착공한 원전해체연구소는 원전 관련 공공기관의 출연과 정부, 지자체의 지원으로 한수원과 산업통상자원부가 주도해 설립을 추진한다.
부산‧울산 경계지역에는 경수로 노형 해체 지원을 위한 원전해체연구소가, 경북 경주에는 중수로 노형 해체 지원을 위한 중수로해체기술원이 설립될 예정으로 2026년 준공을 목표로 추진된다.
세계 최고 수준의 연구시설과 장비를 갖춰 해체기술 개발과 장비 실증 등을 하게 될 원전해체연구소는 모든 노형의 원전을 안전하게 해체하기 위한기술 능력을 확보하고 관련생태계를 육성해 2050년까지 200조원에 달할 것으로 예상되는 글로벌 해체시장 진출을 지원할 계획이다.
