【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=동국대학교 WISE캠퍼스(총장 류완하)는 10월 28일 ‘APEC 2025 KOREA’ 기간 중 참가국 CEO와 관계자들을 대상으로 ‘Ganhwa Seon(zen) Experience Program’을 개최했다고 밝혔다.

이번 프로그램은 ‘Peace of Mind and Prayers for World Peace through Ganhwa Seon(Zen) Practice(간화선 수행을 통한 마음의 평화와 세계 평화를 위한 기도)’를 주제로 열렸으며, 세계 각국의 인사들이 한국 불교 수행의 정수인 간화선(看話禪)을 직접 체험함으로써 ‘마음의 평화’를 넘어 ‘세계의 평화’로 나아가는 메시지를 전했다. 

행사에는 APEC 참가국 CEO와 국내외 귀빈, 외국인 참가자 등 11개국 100여 명이 참석해 동국대 WISE캠퍼스 선(禪)센터에서 진행됐다.

이번 간화선 체험은 “한 번의 체험이 완전한 깨달음을 주지는 않더라도 깨달음으로 향하는 문을 열어주는 계기가 되기를 바란다”는 취지로 마련됐다.

류완하 총장은 환영사에서 “이번 프로그램은 단순한 명상이 아니라 자신을 돌아보고 세상을 새롭게 바라보는 깨달음의 시작이 될 것”이라며 “수불스님의 간화선 수행, 선다도, 전통사찰음식 체험을 통해 참된 평화와 조화의 가치를 느껴보시길 바란다”고 전했다.

간화선 체험은 안국선원장 수불스님(BBS불교방송 이사장, 동국대 석좌교수)의 지도 아래 진행됐으며, 참가자들은 참선과 질의응답을 통해 선(禪)의 정신을 체험하는 시간을 가졌다. 또한 선다도(禪茶道)와 전통사찰음식 발우공양 체험도 함께 이루어져 큰 호응을 얻었다.

수불스님은 “부처님의 깨달음 아래에서는 다툼과 스트레스가 존재할 수 없다”며 “이번 체험이 각국 참가자들의 마음속에 평화의 씨앗을 심는 계기가 되길 바란다”고 말했다.

한편 동국대학교 WISE캠퍼스는 신라 천년의 고도 경주에 위치한 불교종립대학으로, 불교정신을 바탕으로 한 인성교육과 선(禪)문화 확산을 위해 선센터를 설립·운영 중이다. 학교 측은 이번 행사를 계기로 선센터와 간화선 수행이 국내외에 널리 알려지고, 한국 전통 수행법의 세계화에 기여할 것으로 기대하고 있다.

Dongguk University WISE Campus Hosts 'Ganhwa Seon (Zen) Experience Program' for APEC Participating Countries

Dongguk University WISE Campus (President Ryu Wan-ha) announced on October 28th that it hosted the 'Ganhwa Seon (Zen) Experience Program' for CEOs and officials from participating countries during the 'APEC 2025 KOREA' event.

The program, themed 'Peace of Mind and Prayers for World Peace through Ganhwa Seon (Zen) Practice,' allowed global figures to experience Ganhwa Seon (看話禪), the essence of Korean Buddhist practice, firsthand, conveying the message of moving beyond 'peace of mind' to 'world peace.'

The event, held at the Dongguk University WISE Campus Zen Center, was attended by approximately 100 people from 11 countries, including CEOs of APEC participating countries, domestic and international guests, and international participants.

This Ganhwaseon experience was designed with the goal of "opening the door to enlightenment, even if a single experience doesn't lead to complete enlightenment."

President Ryu Wan-ha stated in his welcoming address, "This program is not simply meditation; it will be the beginning of enlightenment, allowing participants to reflect on themselves and see the world in a new way." He added, "I hope that through Venerable Subul's Ganhwaseon practice, the Seon Tea Ceremony, and the experience of traditional temple food, participants will experience the value of true peace and harmony."

The Ganhwaseon experience was led by Venerable Subul, director of Anguk Seon (Chairman of BBS Buddhist Broadcasting and Professor Emeritus at Dongguk University). Participants experienced the spirit of Zen through meditation and Q&A sessions. The program also included a Seon Tea Ceremony and a traditional temple food service, Balwoo Gongyang, which garnered a great response.

Venerable Subul said, "Under the Buddha's enlightenment, conflict and stress cannot exist," and added, "I hope this experience will be an opportunity to plant seeds of peace in the hearts of participants from each country."

Meanwhile, Dongguk University's WISE Campus, a Buddhist university located in Gyeongju, the millennium-old capital of the Silla Dynasty, has established and operates a Seon Center to promote character education and the spread of Seon culture based on Buddhist principles. The university hopes that this event will promote the Seon Center and Ganhwa Seon practice both domestically and internationally, contributing to the globalization of traditional Korean meditation methods.
