이번에 문을 연 실증센터는 2028년까지 총 220억 원(국비 140억 원, 도비 18억 원, 시비 42억 원)이 투입되는 대형 프로젝트다. 센터는 지역 철강·금속 기업이 AI 기반 생산혁신 기술을 현장에 직접 적용·검증할 수 있는 산업 테스트 플랫폼 역할을 맡게 된다.

포항시는 센터 개소를 계기로 향후 5년간 ‘실증–평가–확산’ 단계별 운영전략에 따라 산업 인공지능(AI), 디지털트윈, 스마트 제조기술을 지역 제조업 전반으로 확산한다는 계획이다. 시는 “제조업 경쟁력 회복을 위한 구조 전환의 출발점”이라고 의미를 부여했다.

시 관계자는 “핵심은 지원이 아니라 기업 스스로 디지털 전환 역량을 갖추도록 만드는 것”이라며 "산업 생태계 전반을 연결하는 개방형 테스트베드로 운영할 계획”이라고 말했다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “포항 제조업의 미래 경쟁력은 디지털 전환 속도에 달려 있다”며 “DX 실증센터를 지역 산업 혁신의 엔진으로 삼고 자생적 제조 혁신 생태계를 완성하겠다”고 강조했다.
