【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항시는 9일 산림정책 분야 전문성 강화와 녹색도시 이미지 제고를 위해 이경준 서울대학교 명예교수를 포항시 홍보대사로 위촉했다고 밝혔다.

이경준 명예교수는 우리나라 산림녹화 정책의 기획과 추진을 이끌어 온 산림학계 최고 권위자로, 대한민국 산림녹화 기록물의 유네스코 세계기록유산 등재 추진위원장을 비롯해 한국산림정책연구회장 등을 역임하며 산림녹화의 역사적 가치와 성과를 국내외에 알리는 데 크게 기여해 왔다.

이 교수가 주도한 대한민국 산림녹화 관련 기록물은 지난해 4월 유네스코 세계기록유산으로 공식 등재됐다. 이를 계기로 포항 영일지구 사방사업과 흥해읍 오도리에 위치한 사방기념공원의 역사적 가치가 재조명되면서, 이 교수와 포항시 간의 인연도 본격적으로 이어지게 됐다.

포항 영일지구 사방사업은 1970년대 황폐화된 국토 복원을 위해 추진된 전국 최초의 대규모 사방사업 성공 사례로 평가받고 있다. 해당 사업은 우리나라가 산림녹화 성공 국가로 자리매김하는 데 중요한 전환점이 됐으며, 산림녹화 기록물의 유네스코 세계기록유산 등재 과정에서도 핵심 사례로 활용됐다.

시는 이번 홍보대사 위촉을 계기로 사방기념공원을 국가적 상징성과 대표성을 갖춘 공간으로 발전시키고, 장기적으로는 산림복원 연구·교육·국제교류의 거점으로 조성해 나간다는 방침이다.

이경준 명예교수는 앞으로 산림복원 정책 자문을 비롯해 사방기념공원의 역사적 가치 홍보, 강연 및 대외 활동 등을 통해 ‘산림복원 리더 도시 포항’의 이미지를 국내외에 알리는 역할을 맡게 된다.

이 교수는 “포항시 홍보대사로 위촉돼 뜻깊게 생각한다”며 “포항을 사랑하는 마음으로 산림복원과 사방기념공원의 역사적 가치를 널리 알리는 데 최선을 다하겠다”고 소감을 밝혔다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “산림 분야 최고 권위자의 참여는 포항이 산림복원 우수 도시로 도약하는 데 큰 힘이 될 것”이라며 “영일지구 산림녹화 사업의 소중한 역사적 가치를 바탕으로 포항만의 녹색 정책을 실현해 세계적인 친환경 녹색 모범도시로 나아가겠다”고 말했다.

Records related to Korea's forestry work led by Professor Lee were officially inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in April of last year. This recognition brought to light the historical value of the Pohang Yeongil District Erosion Control Project and the Erosion Control Memorial Park located in Odo-ri, Heunghae-eup, further solidifying the relationship between Professor Lee and Pohang City.

The Pohang Yeongil District Erosion Control Project is recognized as the nation's first successful large-scale erosion control project, implemented to restore the devastated land in the 1970s. This project marked a crucial turning point in establishing Korea as a successful reforestation nation and was also used as a key example in the process of inscribing reforestation records on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.

With this appointment as a public relations ambassador, the city plans to develop the Sabang Memorial Park into a nationally symbolic and representative space, and in the long term, establish it as a hub for forest restoration research, education, and international exchange.

Professor Emeritus Lee Kyung-joon will be responsible for advising on forest restoration policies, promoting the historical value of the Sabang Memorial Park, and promoting Pohang's image as a "leading city in forest restoration" both domestically and internationally.

Professor Lee stated, "I am deeply honored to be appointed as a public relations ambassador for Pohang. With a love for Pohang, I will dedicate myself to promoting forest restoration and the historical value of the Sabang Memorial Park."
