질병관리청이 발표한 ‘2024 급성심장정지 조사통계’에 따르면, 전국에서는 매년 3만 건 이상 급성심장정지가 발생하고 있다. 2024년 한 해 동안 대구 지역에서도 1,238건이 발생한 것으로 집계됐다.

특히 일반인이 현장에서 심폐소생술(CPR)을 시행한 경우 생존율은 14.4%로, 시행하지 않은 경우(6.1%)보다 두 배 이상 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이는 심정지 발생 직후 최초 목격자의 신속한 대응이 생존 여부를 좌우한다는 점을 방증한다.

이에 시는 전국 최초로 보건·의료계열 청년 200여 명을 중심으로 ‘두근대구 심폐소생술 서포터즈’를 구성했다. 심정지 발생 직후 신고와 즉각적인 심폐소생술 시행 등 ‘생존사슬’의 초기 단계를 강화해 시민 참여 기반을 확대하겠다는 취지다.

‘생존사슬’은 ▲인지 및 신고 ▲목격자 심폐소생술 ▲제세동 ▲전문소생술 및 치료 ▲재활·회복으로 이어지는 단계별 대응체계를 의미한다. 이 가운데 초기 단계는 시민의 역할이 가장 중요한 구간으로 평가된다.

서포터즈는 심폐소생술(CPR)과 자동심장충격기(AED) 사용법 등 전문 교육을 이수한 뒤 ▲시민 대상 심폐소생술 교육 지원 ▲자동심장충격기 점검 지원 ▲응급의료 인식 개선 캠페인 등을 전개할 예정이다.

대구시는 이번 서포터즈 출범을 계기로 청년 주도의 생활밀착형 안전 활동을 확대하고, 시민이 현장에서 직접 생명을 지키는 응급대응 문화를 정착시켜 나갈 계획이다.

이재홍 대구광역시 보건복지국장은 “급성심장정지는 누구에게나 예고 없이 발생할 수 있는 위급 상황”이라며 “청년 서포터즈와 함께 시민 참여를 확대해 소중한 생명을 지키는 안전한 도시를 만들어가겠다”고 밝혔다.

The "Chain of Survival" refers to a step-by-step response system that begins with recognition and reporting, bystander CPR, defibrillation, advanced life support and treatment, and then rehabilitation and recovery. Of these, the early stages are considered the most crucial for the role of citizens.

The Supporters will complete specialized training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) use. They will then support CPR education for citizens, assist with AED inspections, and launch a campaign to raise awareness of emergency medical services.

With the launch of this supporter group, Daegu City plans to expand youth-led, everyday safety activities and foster a culture of emergency response where citizens can directly protect lives on the ground.

Lee Jae-hong, Director of the Daegu Metropolitan City Health and Welfare Bureau, stated, "Acute cardiac arrest is an emergency that can strike anyone without warning. Together with the Youth Supporters, we will expand citizen participation to create a safe city that protects precious lives."
