이날 김정기 권한대행은 대구·경북 행정통합의 필요성과 추진 배경을 설명하고, 행정통합 특별법 제정 등 후속 절차를 신속히 추진해야 한다는 점을 강조하며 지역 정치권의 적극적인 이해와 지원을 요청했다.

또한 광주·전남, 대전·충남 등 타 권역과 연계한 특별법안 발의와 국회 통과를 계기로 행정통합 절차를 본격화하기 위해 지역 국회의원들의 지속적인 관심과 협조를 당부했다.

한편 정부는 지난 16일 국무총리 브리핑을 통해 시·도가 행정통합을 추진할 경우 연간 최대 5조 원, 4년간 최대 20조 원 규모의 재정 지원과 함께 2차 공공기관 이전 우선 고려 등 파격적인 인센티브를 제공하겠다는 방침을 밝힌 바 있다.

이에 대구시는 대구·경북이 전국에서 가장 먼저 행정통합 논의를 시작해 지역사회 공론화를 이뤄온 만큼, 정부가 약속한 재정과 권한을 실질적으로 확보할 수 있도록 경북도와의 통합 논의 절차를 보다 속도감 있게 추진해 나간다는 계획이다.

이인선 국민의힘 대구시당 위원장은 “대구·경북 통합 과정에서 특정 지역이 소외되거나 불이익을 받지 않도록 정부 차원의 명확한 대책 마련과 경북도 내 공감대 형성이 우선돼야 한다”며 “지역 정치권에서도 통합이 신속히 추진될 수 있도록 지원을 아끼지 않고, 대구·경북 국회의원들이 함께 특별법의 조속한 발의를 추진하겠다”고 밝혔다.

김정기 대구광역시장 권한대행은 “행정통합은 수도권 중심의 성장 구조를 지방 중심으로 전환해 국가균형발전을 실현하는 중대한 전환점이 될 것”이라며 “공항, 취수원 등 주요 현안 사업을 종합적으로 해결할 수 있는 기회로 삼아 경북도와 지역 정치권과의 긴밀한 협력을 통해 통합 절차를 신속히 추진하겠다”고 말했다.

대구시는 올해 7월 대구경북특별시의 정상 출범을 목표로 경북도와 공동 협력체계인 ‘(가칭)대구경북 행정통합 추진단’을 구성하고, 대구시 자체 통합추진 태스크포스(TF)도 설치해 시·도민 공론화와 통합 특별법 발의 등 후속 절차 이행을 위한 사전 준비를 철저히 해 나갈 방침이다.

Daegu City plans to establish a joint cooperative structure with North Gyeongsang Province, the "(tentative name) Daegu-Gyeongbuk Administrative Integration Promotion Team," with the goal of officially launching the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Special City in July of this year. The city will also establish its own integration task force (TF). This will ensure thorough preparations for follow-up procedures, including public discussion among city and provincial residents and the proposal of a special integration law.
