【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=공직선거법 위반 사건 1심에서 벌금 90만 원을 선고받은 정장수 전 대구광역시 경제부시장이 27일 대구 중구청장 출마를 공식 선언했다. 

사법 리스크를 안은 상태에서의 출마 선언이어서 국민의힘 중구청장 경선 구도에 적잖은 변수가 될 것으로 보인다.

정 전 부시장은 이날 국민의힘 대구시당에서 기자회견을 열고 “대구의 심장, 중구가 다시 뛴다”는 슬로건을 내걸며 오는 6월 지방선거 도전을 공식화했다. 

그는 “중구 재도약을 위해 그동안 쌓아온 모든 경험과 역량을 쏟겠다”고 밝혔다.

공직선거법 위반 1심 판결과 관련해 정 전 부시장은 “불찰에 대해 사법적 판단을 받았고 시민들께 사과드린다”며 “그럼에도 선거를 통해 또 다른 책임을 묻는다면 그 또한 제가 감당해야 할 몫이라고 생각한다”고 말했다. 

출마 자격에는 문제가 없지만, 항소심 결과에 따라 정치적 부담이 커질 수 있다는 지적에 대해서는 “항소 여부와 향후 판단은 절차에 따라 지켜볼 일”이라며 말을 아꼈다.

그동안 동구 등 다른 지역 출마설이 제기됐던 데 대해서는 “제 입으로 다른 지역 출마를 언급한 적은 없다”고 선을 그었다. 

정 전 부시장은 “수성구에 거주지를 마련했고 경제부시장으로서 신공항 사업을 총괄하다 보니 그런 이야기가 나온 것 같다”고 설명했다.

중구 출마 배경으로는 지역의 상징성과 문화적 잠재력을 강조했다. 그는 “대구에서 생활한 지 7년째인데, 중구는 대구 안의 또 다른 도시”라며 “계산성당과 3·1운동, 청라언덕 등 다른 도시와 비교할 수 없는 문화·역사·인문학적 자산을 지닌 곳”이라고 말했다.

이어 “대구의 문화적 구심점인 중구를 제대로 된 문화도시로 키워보고 싶다는 꿈을 오래전부터 가져왔다”고 밝혔다.

홍준표 전 대구시장과의 관계를 둘러싼 부담에 대해서는 신중한 입장을 유지했다. 정 전 부시장은 “홍 전 시장과 정치적 입장이 다를 수 있고, 현재 그의 정치적 행보에 대해 제가 의견을 보태는 것은 도리가 아니라고 생각한다”며 “정치 이전에 인간적인 도리를 지키는 것이 중요하다고 본다”고 말했다. 

다만 “국민의힘 당원으로서 당이 추구해 온 정책과 현안에 대해 부끄럽지 않게 최선을 다해왔다”고 덧붙였다.

주요 공약으로는 ▲경상감영·달성토성 복원과 근대문화골목 정비를 통한 역사문화도시 조성 ▲보행·관광 중심 도시재생과 ‘사랑길’ 브랜드화 ▲동성로 르네상스 프로젝트 완성과 서문시장 4지구 재건축을 통한 세대공감 쇼핑클러스터 육성 ▲대경선 태평로역 신설과 KTX 대구역 정차 추진 등 접근성 개선을 제시했다.

정 전 부시장은 “중구가 다시 대구의 중심을 넘어 영남의 중심으로 설 수 있도록 모든 경험과 역량을 쏟겠다”며 “중구에 산다는 것이 최고의 자부심이 되는 도시를 만들겠다”고 말했다.

Former Daegu Metropolitan City Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs Jeong Jang-soo, who was fined 900,000 won in the first trial for violating the Public Official Election Act, officially announced his candidacy for Daegu's Jung-gu District Mayor on the 27th.

Regarding the first trial ruling for violation of the Public Official Election Act, former Deputy Mayor Jeong stated, "I have received a judicial judgment for my oversight, and I apologize to the citizens. However, if I am held accountable again through the election, I believe that is also my responsibility."

While there are no issues with his eligibility to run, he remained cautious regarding concerns that the appeal's outcome could increase his political burden, stating, "Whether or not to appeal and the future decision will depend on the process."

Regarding speculation that he might run in other districts, such as Dong-gu, he stated, "I have never personally mentioned running in another district."

Former Deputy Mayor Jeong explained, "I have established a residence in Suseong-gu, and as Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs, I think that's why such talk arose."

Asking for his Jung-gu candidacy, he emphasized the region's symbolism and cultural potential. He said, "I've lived in Daegu for seven years, and Jung-gu is like another city within Daegu. It has cultural, historical, and humanistic assets unparalleled by other cities, such as Gyesan Cathedral, the March 1st Movement, and Cheongna Hill."

He continued, "I've long dreamed of developing Jung-gu, the cultural center of Daegu, into a true cultural city."

Regarding the pressure surrounding his relationship with former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo, he maintained a cautious stance. Former Vice Mayor Jeong stated, "My political stance may differ from that of former Mayor Hong, and I don't think it's right for me to offer my opinion on his current political path." He added, "I believe it's important to uphold human duty before politics."

However, he added, "As a member of the People Power Party, I have done my best to uphold the policies and issues the party has pursued without shame."

Key pledges included: ▲ Restoring the Gyeongsang Gamyeong and Dalseong earthen fortifications and redeveloping the Modern Culture Alley to create a historical and cultural city; ▲ Urban regeneration centered on pedestrians and tourism and branding the "Saranggil" (Love Road); ▲ Fostering a shopping cluster that connects generations through the completion of the Dongseong-ro Renaissance Project and the reconstruction of Seomun Market District 4; ▲ Improving accessibility by building a new Taepyeong-ro Station on the Daegyeong Line and promoting a KTX stop at Daegu Station.

Former Vice Mayor Jeong said, “I will devote all my experience and capabilities to ensuring that Jung-gu can once again become the center of Yeongnam, not just the center of Daegu,” and “I will create a city where living in Jung-gu is a source of ultimate pride.”
