김재원 예비후보는 6일 홍 예비후보가 자신의 공약을 발표하면서 시청 이전 재검토 의사를 밝히자 “(대구) 시민이 직접 참여해 민주적 공론화 과정을 거쳐 어렵게 마련한 이전계획을 하루아침에 백지화한다는 발표에 과연 대구시장 후보가 할 말인지 귀를 의심케 한다”며  “홍 후보는 이러한 결정이 내려진 과정을 제대로 알고나 있는지, 시민들이 직접 참여한 공론화 과정을 무시하고 백지화하려는 것이 아닌지 묻고 싶다”고 강력 비난했다. 

그는 “달서구 두류정수장 터에 짓도록 한 결정은 2004년 신청사 건립계획이 수립된 후 15년 만에 시민평가단 252명이 2박 3일 합숙 토론을 거쳐 어렵사리 이뤄졌다. 이미 예산이 투입되어 내년까지 설계가 끝날 예정이고 내후년에는 공사에 들어갈 예정”이라고 거듭 강조하고는 “시장에 당선되면 전임 시장들이 시민들의 공론을 모아 어렵사리 일궈놓은 시정을 다 갈아엎겠다는 자세로 일관한다면 그 피해는 고스란히 대구시민의 몫이 되기에 우려가 크다”고 거듭 강조했다.

그러면서 “저 김재원은 대구 신청사 건립계획의 큰 줄기를 바꾸는 데는 반대한다. 시청 이전 계획이 보다 충실히 이행될 수 있도록 보완점 논의와 함께 시청 후적지 개발사업은 원도심을 살리는 최적 방안을 도출하겠다”며 “대구 발전을 위한 청사진은 하루아침에 그려지지 않는다. 역대 대구시장들의 성과와 시행착오를 거쳐 마련된 토대 위에 차곡차곡 쌓아나가야만 한다. 저는 역대 대구시의 성과 위에 시민과 항상 호흡하며 민주적 절차를 거쳐 계승할 것은 계승하고 바꿀 것은 바꾸며 시정을 일관되게 이끌어 가겠다”고 말했다. 

한편, 6일 홍준표 예비후보가 시청 이전 재검토 방침을 발표하면서 제2대구의료원 추진 검토 방침에 이어 홍 후보가 대구시를 또다시 둘로 갈라놓으려 한다는 비난이 쇄도했다. 정가 일각에서는 “완전히 똘똘 뭉쳐도 모자란 판에 또다시 갈등속에서 시간을 허비하는 일이 없어야 한다”며 “갈등 속에서 무슨 대구 발전을 만들 수 있다는 것인지, 대구시민의 통합과 화합은 고사하고 홍 의원이 시장이 되면 일관성 없는 그의 정책에 대구시가 얼마나 우왕좌왕할 것인지 불을 보듯 훤하다”는 우려의 목소리가 높았다.
