김재원 후보는 “본선이나 다름 없는 국민의힘 대구시장 경선이 깜깜이 선거가 되고 있다. 이는 시민과 당원에 대한 결례이자 직무유기다”라며 “대구시장이 되려는 분이 링에 오르지 않고 장외전만 펼쳐서야 되겠나? 오로지 인지도에만 의지해 어물쩍 넘어가려는 태도는 온당치 못하다”고 정면으로 홍 후보를 비판했다.
