두 단체는 성명에서 “대구시의 취재거부·방해는 홍준표 체제 시정의 막장성과 언론탄압을 상징하는 사건”이라며 “경찰이 또다시 불송치 처분을 내린다면 이는 사건을 ‘해프닝’으로 축소시키려는 시도에 불과하다”고 비판했다.

특히 법원이 과거 판결에서 ‘대구MBC의 취재 자유와 보도의 자유가 심각하게 침해됐다’고 지적한 점을 강조하며, “홍 전 시장의 지시가 아니라고 한다면 결국 취재거부·방해를 실행한 대구시 공무원과 산하기관이 자율적으로 한 것이므로 이들 역시 책임을 피할 수 없다”고 목소리를 높였다.

경실련과 참여연대는 또 “취재거부는 언론의 자유와 국민의 알 권리를 정면으로 침해한 행위”라며 “대구시가 홍 전 시장 퇴임 후 5개월이 지났음에도 사과조차 하지 않고 이를 무마하려 하고 있다”고 지적했다.

두 단체는 대구경찰청에 마지막 경고도 남겼다. “경찰이 다시 홍 전 시장을 불송치한다면 취재거부·방해를 실행한 대구시 공무원과 산하기관 관계자들이 피의자가 될 수 있다”며 “진상과 책임 규명을 포기하지 않을 것이며, 수혜를 본 공무원들도 그 대상이 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.

"If the police again refuse to indict former Mayor Hong, Daegu city officials and affiliated organizations who refused and obstructed reporting could become suspects," they said. "We will not give up on uncovering the truth and uncovering accountability, and the officials who benefited from this will also become targets."
