이러한 입장은 지난 23일 대구시의회 예산결산특별위원회 회의에서 국민의힘 이영애 의원이 “동상 이미지가 박정희 대통령과 닮지 않았다. 오히려 다른 인물을 떠올리게 한다”고 발언한 이후 제기된 논란과 맞물린다. 대구경실련은 이 의원의 지적에 대해 “박정희 기념사업에 우호적인 정치권 내부에서도 문제의식이 드러났다는 점에서 의미 있는 계기”라고 평가했다.

대구경실련은 특히 해당 조형물들이 민주주의와 역사 인식, 공공 공간의 가치를 심각하게 훼손하고 있다고 지적했다. “동상 건립 과정에서 시민 의견 수렴은 전무했고, 유지 과정에서도 비판 여론을 외면하며 불필요한 예산이 낭비됐다”며 “국가철도공단과의 소송, 감시 인력 동원, 포상금 지급 등은 비정상적인 행정 운영의 민낯을 보여준다”고 비판했다.

이어 “시민의 이름으로 운영되는 도시에서, 시민이 납득하지 못하는 조형물과 상징물이 광장의 중심을 차지하는 것은 있을 수 없는 일”이라며 “철거는 더 이상 미룰 수 없는 과제이며, 이를 방치하는 것은 행정의 직무유기”라고 경고했다.

대구경실련은 대구시의회와 대구시에 “정무적 고려 없이 시민 의견을 반영해 동상을 포함한 관련 시설을 전면 철거하고, 공공 공간의 민주적 회복에 나서야 한다”고 촉구했다. 또한 “이 사안은 단순한 외형 논란이 아니라, 민선 8기 대구시정의 퇴행을 상징하는 본질적인 문제”라며 “새로운 시정은 과거의 과오를 명확히 청산하는 데서 출발해야 한다”고 강조했다.
