24일 임미애 의원은 성명을 통해 “대구시의 박정희 동상 설치는 시대착오적일 뿐 아니라 민주주의 가치를 심각하게 훼손하는 처사”며 “친일이력이 있는 독재자의 동상을 세우는 행위는 역사를 왜곡하며 민주주의를 위해 헌신한 이들의 노력을 폄훼하는 행위”라고 지적했다.

그는 “더욱 문제는 대구시가 시민들의 반대 의견을 철저히 무시하고 충분한 공론화 과정 없이 동상 설치를 강행했다는 사실”이라며 “동대구역 광장에 동상을 기습적으로 설치한 것은 반대 집회가 예고된 23일 제막식에 앞서 여론을 무력화하려는 술책”이라고 꼬집었다.

또한 “다양한 시민과 방문객이 이용하는 동대구역 광장에 논란이 되는 인물의 동상을 세워 대구의 이미지를 왜곡하고 사회적 갈등을 조장하는 이유는 무엇인지 묻지 않을 수 없다”고 질타를 이어갔다.

그는 “소유권자인 국가철도공단이 지난 13일 대구지방법원에 ‘공사 중지 가처분 신청’을 제기했지만 이를 묵살하면서까지 동성설치를 강행한 사실은 홍준표 시장이 독재적 통치방식으로 시정을 이끌고 있음을 보여주는 것”이라고 설명했다.

임 의원은 “홍준표 시장은 과거 권위주의적 인물에 의존해 극우 세력의 지지를 결집하고 자신의 정치적 입지를 강화하려 하고 있다”며 “화합과 민주주의 가치와는 거리가 먼 퇴행적 정치의 전형”이라고 맹비난했다.

그러면서 “대구시는 박정희 동상 설치를 즉각 중단하고 시민들의 의견을 수렴하라”며 “역사적 인물에 대한 기념사업은 그의 공과를 균형 있게 평가하며 사회적 합의를 바탕으로 진행돼야 한다”고 강조했다.
