22일 임 의원은 ‘경북 주민 입장 무시하는 홍준표 시장은 경거망동을 멈춰라’라는 제목으로 성명서를 발표했다.

앞서 이철우 경북도지사는 행정통합을 위한 민의수렴을 위해 주민투표를 추진하겠다고 밝혔다. 그러나 홍준표 대구시장은 주민투표 없이 시도의회 의결만을 거치겠다는 입장을 고수하고 있다.

지난 21일 기자들을 만난 홍 시장은 "(대구경북 행정통합) 막바지 시점에 주민투표를 하자, 공론화위원회를 만들자는 것은 통합을 하지 말자는 것"이라며 “(시장·군수들을)설득할 자신이 없으면 통합을 하지 말자고 말하고 마는 것이지 주민투표를 하자고 하면 우리는 거기에 끌려갈 시간이 없다”고 말했다.

이에 대해 임미애 의원은 “민주주의에 대한 이해도 없고 훈련도 덜 된 정치인의 모습을 적나라하게 보여주는 발언”이라고 맹비난했다.

임 의원은 “무엇을 어떻게 바꿀 것인지 구체적인 청사진을 제시하고 주민들의 동의를 구하는 과정이 전제되어야 제대로 된 행정통합이 이뤄질 수 있다”며 “주민들은 그저 시장·군수가 하자는 대로 따라오는 우매한 존재가 아니다”라고 강조했다.

이와 함께 “혹여나 홍준표 시장이 행정통합 불발의 책임을 경북 북부로 돌리려 하는 일은 절대 없어야 한다”며 우려를 덧붙였다.

아울러 그는 “제대로 합의안을 논의할 시간도 없이 일방적으로 밀어붙이는 태도는 오히려 불신만 키우고 통합이 된다고 하더라도 후유증만 남길 뿐”이라며 “자신의 대권 행보만을 바라보며 경거망동하는 홍준표 시장에게 이런 식으로는 절대 대권을 달릴 수 없을 것”이라고 경고했다.
