이에 대해 민주당 의원들은 “대구시의 성장을 의미하는 GRDP와 인구가 지난 30년간 지속적으로 감소되어왔다”며 “특별법만 통과되어 통합만 되면 이 수치들이 두 배 이상 늘어난다는 것은 어불성설”이라고 지적했다.

특히 대구시의 인구 전망에 대해 “20년 만에 700만 명이 늘어나려면 대구‧경북 가임여성을 50만 명으로 잡았을 때 12명을 낳아야 가능한 숫자”라고 설명했다.

특례특별법의 통과 실현성에 대해서도 의구심을 표했다. 이들은 “통합특례시장에게 과도한 권한을 이양하는 법안이 통과되려면 타 지자체와의 형평성을 고려해야한다”며 “일방적으로 대구‧경북 통합에만 이점을 주는 법안을 다른 지역 국회의원이 찬성할 것이라는 대구시의 기대가 허황된 꿈을 꾸고 있는 것은 아닌가”를 꼬집었다.

아울러 “이런 중차대한 일은 시민에게 소상히 알리고 공론화를 거친 후 주민투표를 진행해야한다”며 “민주당도 합리성과 민주성이 갖춰지는 통합이라면 먼저 찬성 목소리와 국회 통과를 약속 할 것”이라고 강조했다.
