【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=더불어민주당 당대표 선출을 위한 8·2 전당대회가 가까워지며, 유력 후보인 박찬대·정청래 의원 간 경쟁 구도가 뚜렷해지고 있다.

중도 확장성과 조직 운영 능력을 내세운 박 의원과, 강한 개혁 드라이브로 핵심 지지층을 결집하는 정 의원이 각각 ‘원팀’과 ‘강한 리더십’을 앞세웠다.

14일 대구를 찾은 박찬대 의원은 “당·정부·대통령이 하나의 팀이 돼 이재명 정부를 성공시켜야 한다”며 안정적 국정 뒷받침을 강조했다. 

그는 “수도권과 호남만으로는 국민 통합이 어렵다”며 “충청·강원은 물론 영남권 지지 확장을 위한 실질적 성과 중심의 정치가 필요하다”고 밝혔다. 

특히 “내년 지방선거 승리를 위해 전당대회 직후 ‘지방선거 기획단’을 조속히 발족하고, 영남 맞춤형 공약과 예측 가능한 공천 룰을 제시하겠다”고 밝혔다. 이어 “영남권 인재를 적극 등용하고, 지역 조직에 실질적인 권한을 부여하는 정당 개혁도 함께 추진할 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

박 의원은 “강한 한 명이 이끄는 정치보다, 팀 전체가 승리할 수 있는 전략이 필요하다”며 “170명 국회의원을 하나로 묶고, 당을 안정적으로 이끌어온 조직 조율 능력이 제 강점”이라고 말했다.

반면 정청래 의원은 같은 날 공개된 발언에서 “지금은 태종 같은 강한 리더십이 필요한 시기”라며 개혁을 선도하는 지도자상에 방점을 찍었다. 그는 “검찰·사법·언론 개혁의 고속도로를 건설해 이재명 정부의 성공을 뒷받침하겠다”며, “당이 중심을 잡고 내란 상황을 조속히 수습해야 한다”고 밝혔다.

정 의원은 자신을 “선당후사의 아이콘이자 개혁 전면에 선 정치인”으로 소개하며, “당 대표는 최전방 공격수이자 최후방 수비수 역할을 모두 감당해야 한다”고 강조했다. 그는 TK 지역 전략과 관련해 “대표 직속 민원실을 만들어 지역 현안을 신속히 처리하고, 상임위 활동과 직접 연결하겠다”고 설명했다.

윤석열 전 대통령을 향한 강도 높은 비판도 이어졌다. 정 의원은 “내란 혐의로 윤 전 대통령이 국민의힘 수석 당원으로서 책임을 져야 한다”며, “향후 내란 특검을 통해 위헌정당 해산 청구가 가능한 상황이 된다면 당 대표로서 앞장서겠다”고 말했다.

이번 전당대회는 민주당이 향후 총선 전략뿐 아니라, 이재명 정부의 성격과 과제를 어떻게 풀어갈지를 가늠하는 분수령이 될 것으로 보인다. 

정 의원이 개혁 동력을 이어갈 강력한 리더십을, 박 의원이 중도 확장과 안정된 조직 운영을 내세우며 양자 간 선명한 선택지를 제시한 가운데, 당심과 민심이 어디로 향할지 주목된다.

On the other hand, Rep. Jeong Cheong-rae emphasized the image of a leader who leads reforms in his speech released on the same day, saying, “Now is the time when we need strong leadership like Taejong.” He said, “I will build a highway for prosecution, judiciary, and media reforms to support the success of the Lee Jae-myung government,” and “The party must take the lead and quickly resolve the internal strife.”

Rep. Jeong introduced himself as “an icon of party-first succession and a politician at the forefront of reform,” and emphasized, “The party leader must play the role of both the front-line attacker and the last defender.” Regarding the TK regional strategy, he explained, “We will create a civil affairs office directly under the representative to quickly handle regional issues and directly connect them with standing committee activities.”

Strong criticism of former President Yoon Seok-yeol also continued. Rep. Chung said, “Former President Yoon should take responsibility as a senior member of the People Power Party for the charges of sedition,” and “If a situation arises in which a special prosecution for sedition can be conducted in the future to request the dissolution of an unconstitutional political party, I will take the lead as the party representative.”

This national convention is expected to be a watershed moment for the Democratic Party to gauge not only its future general election strategy but also how it will address the nature and tasks of the Lee Jae-myung government.

With Rep. Chung emphasizing strong leadership to continue the reform momentum and Rep. Park emphasizing moderate expansion and stable organizational operation, attention is focused on where the party and public sentiment will turn.
