이번 대선을 "정치를 시작하는 첫이자 마지막"이라 밝힌 그는, 이재명 더불어민주당 후보에 대한 지지를 공개적으로 선언했다. 그는 "이 후보는 대구·경북의 아들이며, 추진력과 결단력을 갖춘 인물"이라며 "이제 고향에서 따뜻하게 품어줄 때"라고 호소했다. 이어 "잘못한 게 그렇게 큰가? 왜 고향에서 외면받아야 하냐"며 "호남 출신 보수주의자인 내가 간곡히 부탁드린다"고 말했다.

경제 정책에 대해서는 "이 후보는 누구보다 자본주의적 시장경제 원리에 충실한 사람"이라며 "기업이 잘 돼야 경제가 산다는 점을 잘 알고 있고, 정치 보복도 없을 것"이라고 밝혔다.

사법개혁에 대한 우려에는 "국민의 의견과 법조계의 목소리를 수렴해 신중하게 추진할 것"이라며 "사법권 장악 시도는 없을 것"이라고 못 박았다.

이 위원장은 "정치인만 변한다고 세상이 달라지지 않는다. 유권자가 달라져야 한다"며 "보수도 혁신이 필요하다. 진정한 보수를 바라는 사람이라면 지금의 기회를 놓쳐선 안 된다"고 강조했다.
