이에 대해 민주당 경북도당은 “국민의힘은 ‘사고지역에 후보공천을 하지 않는다’는 원칙을 무시하고 당규가 강제규정이 아니라는 이유로 안하무인 공천을 시도하고 있다”고 주장했다.
이들은 “김충섭 전 시장의 불법행위로 인해 여러 명의 전 현직 공무원이 처벌 받고 재판을 2년 넘게 끌면서 심각한 시정공백과 혼란이 야기됐다”며 “시민들을 실망시키고 오랫동안 고통으로 내몰고도 ‘공천이 곧 당선’이라는 오만함에 젖어 후보를 공천하려는 국민의힘을 강력히 규탄한다”고 말했다.
아울러 “만일 공천으로 이어진다면 김천 시민들의 준엄한 심판이 있을 것임을 명심하기 바란다”고 강조했다.
