전통적 ‘보수 핵심 지역’이자 국민의힘의 텃밭으로 평가받는 대구·경북(TK)에서 이번 대구시장 선거는 계파·세대·출신 성향이 뒤섞인 최대 규모의 경선판이 될 것이라는 전망이 우세하다.

국민의힘 내 최다선(6선)인 주호영 국회부의장은 최근 지역 언론인 모임에서 “상당 부분 출마 준비를 했다”고 말하며 사실상 출마 의지를 드러냈다. 주 부의장은 내년 초 최종 결심을 밝히기 전 지역 여론을 수렴하겠다는 입장이지만, 당 안팎에서는 이미 본격적인 출마 수순에 들어갔다는 관측이 짙다.

지난 지방선거에서 홍 전 시장에게 도전장을 냈던 유영하 의원(초선)도 재도전 여부를 고심 중이다. 초선 최은석 의원은 최근 기자들과 만나 “GRDP 전국 최하위 대구 경제는 정치인·관료 출신 시장으로는 회복하기 어렵다”며 “경제 분야에서 3선 이상의 경력을 쌓았다”고 강조했다. 공식 출마 선언은 내년 1월로 예정돼 있다.

기초단체장들의 발걸음도 빨라지고 있다. 배광식 북구청장, 이태훈 달서구청장 등 ‘3선 구청장 그룹’이 광역단체장 도전설의 중심에 서며 경쟁 구도는 더욱 복잡해지는 양상이다. 이만규 대구시의회 의장, 이재만 전 동구청장 등도 잠재 후보로 꾸준히 이름을 올리고 있다.
