【브레이크뉴스 대구】이성현 기자=25일 해외 일정에서 귀국하자마자 대구시장 출마를 선언한 국민의힘 주호영 국회부의장은 예상대로 대구·경북 행정통합의 필요성을 강하게 강조했다. 

주 부의장은 행정통합 추진 과정에서 절차 문제와 여론의 동요, 전제 조건 미비 등으로 난항이 거듭되고 있다는 지적에 대해 “2월 안에 관련 법을 통과시키지 못하면 우리는 4년을 더 기다려야 한다”고 말했다.

그는 “4년이라는 시간이 흐른 뒤 다시 통합을 이야기하게 되면, 그 사이 통합을 이미 완성한 다른 지역으로 알짜배기 공기업과 공공기관들이 이전해 버릴 것”이라며 “그 지역들은 각종 특례를 통해 산업 인프라와 정주 인구가 안정적으로 자리 잡게 되지만, 우리는 안정적인 재정 확보는 물론 괜찮은 공기업·공공기관 하나 제대로 확보하지 못하는 상황에 놓일 수 있다”고 했다.

이어 “부수적인 문제들은 우선 통합을 해놓고, 이후 논의를 거쳐 합의하며 완성해 나가면 된다”며 “나는 정확히 ‘선(先)통합, 후(後)논의’ 주의자”라고 거듭 강조했다.

당내 상황과 관련한 질문에서 주 부의장은 박근혜 전 대통령이 지방선거에 영향을 미치기 위해 직접 나설 가능성은 크지 않다고 전망했다. 그는 장동혁 대표의 단식 중단을 설득한 이후 박 전 대통령이 모습을 드러낸 점, 이른바 ‘윤 어게인’ 세력과 친박 그룹의 재결집 가능성 등 여러 변수가 거론되는 데 대해 “장 대표의 단식 중단을 설득한 것은 오롯이 건강을 걱정한 것이었을 뿐, 다른 의도나 정치적 계획이 있다고 보지 않는다”고 말했다.

또 “지방선거에 어떤 영향을 주기 위해 움직일 것으로도 보지 않는다”고 선을 그었다. 다만 정치권에서는 주 부의장의 이 같은 발언이 박 전 대통령의 향후 행보를 의식한 일종의 견제성 발언이라는 해석도 나온다.

한편 주 부의장은 그동안의 입장과 마찬가지로 당내 경선을 위해 국회의원직을 사퇴하지는 않겠다는 뜻을 분명히 했다. 다만, 보궐선거가 지방선거와 함께 치러질 수 있도록 당 차원의 조치가 이뤄질 것으로 전망했다.
