김 부위원장은 최근 발표한 입장문에서 “대구·경북은 1980년대까지 대한민국 성장 산업의 중심지였으나, 1990년대 이후 대기업의 수도권 이전과 주력 산업 쇠퇴로 지역 경쟁력이 약화됐다”고 진단했다. 특히 대구는 섬유산업 쇠퇴 이후 장기간 1인당 지역내총생산(GRDP)에서 전국 최하위권을 벗어나지 못하고 있다고 언급했다.

김 부위원장은 이와 관련해 주호영 국회 부의장이 2026년 1월 17일 사회관계망서비스(SNS)를 통해 대구·경북 행정통합 추진 의지를 밝힌 점을 언급하며, 지역 정치권의 역할을 강조했다. 주 부의장은 당시 “더 이상 지체할 시간이 없다”며 통합 추진에 앞장서겠다는 뜻을 밝힌 바 있다.

김대현 부위원장은 “대구·경북 행정통합은 정치적 이해관계를 떠나 군공항·민간공항 이전, 취수원 이전 등 지역의 오랜 현안을 동시에 해결할 수 있는 정책 수단이 될 수 있다”며 “대구·경북이 다시 대한민국의 중심 도시로 도약하기 위한 계기가 돼야 한다”고 밝혔다.

Vice Chairman Kim emphasized the role of local politicians, citing National Assembly Vice Speaker Joo Ho-young's announcement of his intention to pursue the integration on January 17, 2026, via social media. At the time, Vice Speaker Joo stated, "There is no more time to delay," and expressed his commitment to leading the integration effort.

Vice Chairman Kim Dae-hyun stated, "The administrative integration of Daegu and Gyeongbuk can be a policy tool that can simultaneously address long-standing regional issues, such as the relocation of military and civilian airports and water sources, regardless of political interests." He added, "This should serve as an opportunity for Daegu and Gyeongbuk to once again leap forward as central cities of the Republic of Korea."
