그는 “일부 당 원로들이 당이 혼란한데 당신이 빠지면 수습할 사람이 없다”며 강하게 만류하고 기류도 사실 있다“고 밝히면서 ” 반대로 대구를 오래 경험했고, 지금 대구에 필요한 리더라며 출마를 요구하는 기류도 있다“고 덧붙였다.

최근 초재선 의원들의 사과 성명에 대하여 주 의원은 “정치의 방향은 결국 민심인데, 지금 문제가 된 것은 왜곡된 자료를 민심으로 착각하는 데 있다”고 말하면서 “예전엔 초재선 의원들이 당의 잘못된 방향을 제때 잡아줬는데 이번엔 그런 기능이 거의 작동하지 않았다. 심지어 그중에는 용산의 뜻을 당에 전달해온 인물도 있다. 위험하다 할 때는 아무소리 안내다가 누구나가 다 이야기할 때 그제서야 하는 것은 유감”이라고 말했다. 그러면서도 “(만시지탄이지만) 이제라도 목소리가 나온 건 다행”이라고 진단했다.

(장동혁 대표가) 방향 전환 하는 게 맞다. 모두가 전환해야 한다고 한다. 정치평론가들의 평가가 장 대표에 대한 평가 아닌가 생각한다”며 조심스럽게 선을 그었다.

경선 비율을 ‘당원 70 : 일반 30’으로 조정하는 논의에 대해선 강하게 반대했다. 그는 “공적 선거에서 당원 비율을 높이는 것은 옳지 않다”며 “민주당처럼 당원의 권한을 높이려면 제도 보장도 해야 하는데 지금 구조에선 민심 비중이 오히려 더 커져야 한다”고 밝혔다. 그러면서 “12월이 고비 같다. 남은 12월 20여일 동안 당이 민심을 되찾는 방향으로 확실히 전환해야 한다”며 “내년 선거는 지금부터 달라지느냐에 달려 있다”고 말했다.
